Sonoma County is busy fixing up roads, but some readers have been writing in that there are other roads that are worse.

Here’s an opportunity to let people know what you think the worst road is. So in the spirit of public service, leave a comment below telling what you think the worst road, or particular stretch of road, in the county and why. I’ll compile a list and will report back. And I’ll call the county or city road department and ask them what they plan to do about your worst roads, so check back in coming days for updates.

I forgot to say why. There are too many potholes that could damage a car’s suspension or cause a motorcycle to crash on Merced Ave. between Hwy 12 and Occidental Rd.

I’ve have been trying to get the attendition of someone about this road for over a year on the PD’s “See, click, fix”. Fixing this problem road will give an extra artery to the west side of Sonoma. The posted speed limit is 40 but don’t dare drive that fast, you will have repairs to your car and maybe your back. There are more filled pot holes than there is road.

Cleveland Avenue-from where you come off the 101 south by Starbucks, south to Industrial. SO rough! I travel it several times a week and my car gets shaken and stirred!

Things are pretty bad in the West county and I couldn’t narrow it down to just one, so here are two that come to mind: Old Monte Rio Road in Guerneville and Moscow Rd in Duncans Mills. Parts of Old Monte Rio Road are sliding down the hill toward Highway 116, there are potholes 5+ inches deep and in one section, a spring feed creek has craved a gully for almost a 1/4 mile. Freezeout Rd feels like it’s more pot hole than pavement. During the winter, the drainage is almost nonexistant and slides are common

hard to narrow, but in the Sebastopol area I’d vote for Lynch Road, Hessel Road, Highway 12 from town of Sebastopol to near Freestone, and Pleasant Hill Road.

Sonoma Mountain Road off Adobe Road (Pet.) is by far the worst road in Sonoma Ccounty. Every rain produces dozens of potholes and the whole surface is bumpy because of previously filled potholes. It is dangerous because it is narrow and drivers are watching the road for potholes instead of looking for oncoming traffic.

    June 16th, 2010 10:32 am

  32. Cheryl

Wood Road off of Fulton Road is by far the worst road. It is a cut through off of River Road and has so many potholes it is dangerous especially early morning and night when it is dark and you can’t see them. Before you know it you have hit a huge hole. Patching them just makes them worse. The whole street needs to be repaved.

    June 16th, 2010 10:33 am

  33. gerry2280

Piner Road is narrow, full of potholes and it slants in different directions, all of them wrong. A lot of traffic uses Piner, both cars and bicycles, and it is very dangerous.

  34. Don

    Dutton Meadow is a disgrace.

There are 2 schools here and they still don’t even have sidewalks! Every day cars have to drive down the pothole infested road and try to not run into kids on bikes and children walking on the edge of the road. The road has huge potholes that are so bad they will bottom out your suspension and cause some nasty bump steer sending your car in unpredictable directions. The street is only a few blocks long and in the 10 years I have lived here it has never been completely repaved; only patched. The patches disintegrate fast and the potholes get bigger and bigger.

In the same amount of time I have seen the nicer areas of Santa Rosa get repaved and radar signs added with nice crosswalks. These roads were already VERY nicely maintained. There are no schools or even much foot traffic yet all the safest streets in Santa Rosa are in fountain grove and other high end areas.

Whoever is responsible should be ashamed.

    June 16th, 2010 10:38 am

  35. Nancy

Irwin Lane is probably the worst with Mill Station Rd coming in next. The shoulders have fallen away so much there is barely room for cars to pass and forget 2 cars and a bike. Lots of potholes that they attemt to fix but until it is huge the just let it go.

    June 16th, 2010 10:43 am

  36. abe

Middle Rincon Road between Montecito and Badger Rd.- absolutely treacherous on sections right at the school. Very high traffic during school year has torn it up. Really a lousy street for kids that work hard at an award winning school, and no sidewalk across the street to top it off. An insult to a nice area, and a danger to children and cars.

Regarding McLovin’s comment at 9:30…the construction on 101 North of Steele Ln is not finished yet. The surface will be paved this year. Although I agree that it should not have been out of towners to do the work, you should know it is not bad work, just not finished yet.

Graton Road from town heading west to the top of the hill slightly past Sullivan. No shoulders & cars often go into ditches. Happened just yesterday. Years ago a pedestrian was killed by a car. Also, I can’t tell you how many times idiots pass or race & I have encountered two cars barreling down the road at me, one in each lane coming at me causing me to brake & hope one wises up or me having to go into the ditch myself as a last resort. Totally frightening.

Westside Road – a tourist destination road highly frequented by bikers but has no bike lane. Uneven pavement, potholes and patches that don’t “patch” but make things worse.

  44. ME

Purrington Rd. between I st. and Mountain View. It was at the top of the worst roads list last time. Nothing but filled pot holes.

  45. Carrie

The worst roads have to be in west county. So many to name, but the #1 has to be Burnside road (both sections), along with Barnett Valley Road, Bloomfield, Blank, Canfield, oh and did I already mention BURNSIDE!!! You hit so hard on some of the sink holes(they can’t be pot holes, they are too big) that your teeth rattle and your car shakes. You try to advoid the holes to then hit the bumps, it really is Mr. Toads wild ride and your thankful you get to your destination!

  46. Jim

Irwin ln is the worst and gets my vote. I have lived near this road for 5 years and have only seen pothole repairs done. It is by far the worst road. Jim

I won’t pick on a particular highway. But I would pick ANY road over the Guerneville hwy that just recieved a paving job. With all the people being laid off and the budget crisis, we pave perfectly good roads and then contract out of the county to get the work done! BS!

Stony Point road south of Sebastopol Road! Should be 4 lane, or at least have a turn lane in the middle. It must be one of the most heavily traveled roads around Santa Rosa and it gets zero attention, every year it gets a little bit worse.

I second ADOBE ROAD – from Petaluma Hill Rd. to Corona Rd. You can practically drive hands free due to the ruts in the road. This is a high volume road that needs some serious attention.

Snyder Lane in Rohnert Park. This is a very important road. This is the road that most of RP’s children are transported to and from school each day. They also walk or ride their bikes. It is bumpy, narrow, gridlocked and dangerous.

Lancaster was chosen to be repaved a couple years back because GG Transit buses drive through it. I don’t understand that logic.

    June 16th, 2010 1:30 pm

FRIE rd, it doesn’t get any worst, even after they repaved half the little sucker most people I know won’t even drive on it! for roads not on everybody’s everyday driving routine, Morreli is by far one of the worst in the friggin world.

There’s so many but I commute daily on Old Redwood Highway from the 101 interchange to Cotati. Does the county repair anything in Sonoma???? It’s really horrible. Recently moved here from Marin and there’s a distinct difference – like the Clampetts next to the Rockefellers.

In Sebastopol, Blackney Road has to be on top of the list. It makes Lynch Road seem like a super hiway. All you need is a glass of milk, some ice cream and a lid for the glass. Take that on a drive of Blackney Road and you have a milk shake!

    June 16th, 2010 1:57 pm

Arnold dr in sonoma. The pot holes are big and the fixes that were done are just as bad

More votes for Irwin Lane and Piner Road, plus Laughlin Road. With needing to avoid both Guerneville and River Roads right now due to road work, it’s become even more obvious just how bad Piner Road (the only other east/west connection for the area) really is.

    June 16th, 2010 2:07 pm

Stadler Ln, in unincorporated Petaluma. There’s a ticket on See-Click-Fix but nothing has been done. The one-lane road has not been paved in 40+ years, there are potholes, washouts, clogged culverts and is subject to dumping of tires, furniture, mattresses, cats, dogs, rabbits. The speed limit is 25, but you should really go 20 because of the bumps and blind curves. It takes an off-road vehicle to go more than 20 without extreme bumps. The county fills it in with loose asphalt every summer and it is gone within weeks. There are trees which often cut the power, and fall in to the road. The road is not level, and has limited drainage. Culverts are filled with debris and dirt from the last 40+ years and flood every year. There are countless roads like this in unincorporated Petaluma which are lost to freeway expansions and I think it’s time to give these roads an upgrade. More than 40 years? Come on. It’s time.

Hway#116 from Guerneville to the coast is BAD! I can’t remember much paving done here of late and I have the broken shocks to show for it! Cal Trans is a joke around here! Many times we see them standing around with clipboards and sometimes one guy shoveling asphalt! Pathetic effort!!

HWY 128 out of Geyserville to the Casino…….and Geysers Rd. from Alexander Valley to the Geysers.

  75. Dianne Smith

Please don’t forget Tilton Road, west of Sebastopol. Potholes are a regular problem but the road shoulders have decayed so badly over the years we’re down to one lane to cover both directions over most of this short but busy road. You take your life in your hands during commute hours when cars speed around tight curves as if it were a two lane road. To share another comment I see above, many of the roads listed above seem like super highways compared to others in west county. What’s up with forgetting West County when road repairs are assigned throughout the county?

    June 16th, 2010 2:45 pm

Burbank Avenue between Hearn Avenue and Sebastopol road. The road is one big pothole!

    June 16th, 2010 2:47 pm

Mark West Springs Road. Every time it rains, there are 1,000 new potholes. This road needs major repaving–not just filling in the potholes that come back with each rain. I wince every time my tire falls into one of these holes and pray that my tire doesn’t pop or axle brakes.

Irwin Rd between Occidental and Hwy 12 AND Todd Road from Llano to Stony Point are by far the worst. For all the traffic I see on Todd, I am amazed it has not been mentioned more. Sullivan Road between Graton and Green Valley also is bad.

Keiser between Snyder & Petaluma Hill in Rohnert Park is the worst! There is a HUGE pothole at the Snyder end and they just keep patching like it will fix it. Helllooooo? You’ve patched 20 times and it’s still a problem! How about fixing it right the first time?

My pet peeve is Willowside Rd. between Guerneville and Hall roads. The section leading up to the small bridge is all right but the rest is terrible. I like the sign that says “Share the Road” with the bike symbol. It should say “Ride at your own risk!” There’s no road to share! It needs to be widened as well as re-surfaced to safely accommodate cyclists.

King Road and Liberty Road in West Petaluma… guaranteed to ruin your suspension if you drive the 35 mph.. Driver beware

    June 16th, 2010 4:31 pm

  89. JP

I travel county roads on my bike mostly, so from that perspective, the worst I’ve encountered are Faught and Sonoma Mountain from the Petaluma side. Patches over patches covering patched sections of filled in potholes…

    June 16th, 2010 4:38 pm

  90. Michael

I drive Irwin lane every day, and it’s nothing compared to Oasis Drive. The potholes on that road are craters, some several feet in diameter. Don’t attempt to drive the 15 mph speed limit unless you’re in a tracked vehicle such as an M1A1 Abrams.

    June 16th, 2010 4:49 pm

  91. Kindra

Lichau Road in Penngrove. The potholes have been patched over so many times that no matter what part of the road you drive on you’ll never get a smooth ride.

I was amazed to see repair work on Mark West Springs Road which was just totally repaved in the past two or three years and yet nothing is ever done with roads on either side of the lodge. Amazing planning.

Millbrae Ave.! I couldn’t think of the name when I first posted.
I really liked the way Stony Point was repaved in the Rite Aid area and then dug up a couple of weeks later………….. Good planning. The patch isn’t too bad, but check out in a couple of years.
Dutton Meadows is being repaved. That one is BAD.

There have been signs telling of an overlay project on W. College for a while……………….. IT DOESN’T NEED IT!!!

    Tough call:

    1. Adobe Road from Corona to Old Redwood Highway.
    2. Old Redwood Highway from Petaluma City limits to Cotati City limits.
    3. Main Street through Penngrove.
The County refuses to fix this area as the residents of Penngrove feel this will increase traffic through their community. As if it can get worse than it already is. These are high traffic areas that continue to get ignored, cold patched, or “sealed and chipped”.
    4. Also, Snyder Lane in Rohnert Park from Southwest Blvd. to Golf Course.

My vote for the most dangerous road in this County is the one I live on–HWY 116 between Guerneville and Forestville. The pavement is OK but there is absolutely NO shoulders and sharp, blind curves. There are blind driveways and no paved turnouts to let you get out of the way of those who treat this road like a road race course. Add huge trucks and buses trying to navigate this road, along with bicyclists and HEAVY, FAST moving traffic and you have a continuing recipe for disaster. I’ve witnessed many accidents on this road next to where I live, including a fatal head-on incident right in front of my property! This road has no business being part of a State highway which hosts many tourists, unfamiliar with this area. The State needs to move HWY 116 to River road which is better engineered for heavy traffic and especially big rigs.

Cleveland Ave along side of K-Mart and north. The driveways from the stores are not flush with the road. Did Kindergarten Kinde do the paving?

Lichau Road! Nothing but potholes and patches. Lot of people live off that road and pay big real estate taxes and get nothing from the county in return. Fix the road!

Hands down the worst road in Sonoma County is Bennett Valley Road past the fire station all the way out to Warm Springs Road.

Gov Schwarzenegger needs to receive this list…before a lousy ten bucks is added to vehicle fees. We’ve already paid for our road’s maintenence many times over…where is the money being diverted? When Arnold ran for office, his pledge was to conduct an audit to find that out…someone is still lining their pockets and I’m replacing tires and suspension parts!!! Every driver should be outraged, and moron bicyclists should shut their traps…try riding 120 miles on your bike laden with groceries for a sick relative, fools! You know you drive a cage when you need to! Calistoga Rd between SR and Calistoga is absolutely treacherous as one must swerve around countless tire-flattening potholes, many existing for months! Fix the %$#@! roads!!! We’ve already paid to have it done!!!

Does anyone go to the DMV? Corby is the worst one for longer than I can rember. Maybe it not the best neighborhood but it needs more attention!

I travel Green Valley Road everyday and it has pretty much ruined my axel and suspension on my car. During the rainy season, I can’t even get home with the roads flooded in at least two or three places.

Sonoma Mountain Road south off Bennett Valley Road, Pressley & Roberts to Petaluma Hill Road.

Bennett Valley Road from the city limits to Grange Road and past Sonoma Mountain Road all the way to Warm Springs Road.

It’s gotten to the point that residents are painting bright orange paint around the worst potholes in an effort to avoid accidents.

East Austin Creek road in Cazadero is plastered with deep potholes. County crews patch holes occassionally but the relatively short road needs to be repaved, at least every century or two! All of you taxpayers who live on small country roads can relate, I’m sure. Alan

Roseland vs, Fountaingrove: POOR/MIDDLE class neighborhood = bumby roads, patches, potholes; RICH/UPPER CLASS neighborhood = cement, paved roads… See the correlation? Enough said. I also hate driving the very narrow roads of Wilfred & Millbrae going to Rohnert Park.

The freeway from Windsor through Steel lane there are some many huge bump areas that the safest you can drive is 45mph not 55mph I popped up my seat and hit my head on the roof top And I was going 55mph. they should just close the whole carpool lane

    7/15/10 Comment on the Comments

Judging by these comments, there are no roads that need patching in the Sonoma Valley. They must be getting all road repair money. It clearly has not going to West and Central, or even North.

probably not nearly as traveled as some of these other streets, but tucker street in healdsburg could use some work, especially on the eastern end, by that grove.

Lichau Road has several areas where there IS no road on the outside edges. It has crumbled and disappeared. This leads to crashes or cars going over the steep embankment. Yes, I have seen cars that have gone over.

The whole section from Roberts Road up to Gravity Hill needs to be completely redone. It’s nothing but big bumps and holes.

I think all the neighbors should get together and sue the county for all the damages to their vehicles. Lichau Road is a crime.

Wood Road, between Fulton road and Woolsey road is so bad you have to drive from one side to the other side of the road to miss the big pot holes. I have lived her most of my 67 years and they have never once repaved the road. Just patched the pot holes that seam to come back time and time again.

Shiloh exit going south on 101. What idiot only paves 1/2 of a lane and leaving a 2 1/2 inch lip? I can’t believe more people haven’t been injured or killed getting stuck on this hazard.

Sonoma Mountain Rd between Warm Springs and Pressly Rd. Enterprise Rd.

I asked my neighbors who have lived here 50 years and it has NEVER been repaved. In some places it is all pothold patches and bumpier than anything I have ever seen. It is basically a covered wagon trail with some asphalt on it that is 60+ years old. It is very dangerous in places.

We pay tons of taxes and get the worst roads. I even asked a road worker and he said he was embarrassed of the roads. When the road washed out it took the county 3 years to fix it??? Where do we live? the third world?

Have you ever noticed 101 as you cross the line from Marin to Sonoma? Have you ever driven Trinity Rd from Napa to Sonoma?
Nice roads that turn to garbage.

The worse this problem gets the more it will cost to fix. Where are all my tax dollars going? Sonoma should be embarrassed of their roads. it doesnt help bring new development or tourism to have horrible roads.

I hope some of our supervisors are reading this?

I will have to agree on Burnside Rd. in Sebastopol (both sections). There is not only a lot of treacherous potholes, but the edges of the road are deteriating (sic) to the point that anything larger/wider than a standard pickup truck is impossible to pass without going into a ditch with the outside of your tires. And if it a propane or hay truck you are pretty much S.O.L. Also have to agree about Rio Nido.

Bloomfield Road out from Sebastopol is fairly decent, but once you get past approx. Pleasant Hill Rd, it gets really bad. Then again, Blank Road (connects to Bloomfield) is terrible too. Some of the potholes are big enough that you can literally not go around them!

My vote for worst potholes goes to the curve on W Sexton Rd between Sexton Rd and Tilton Rd in Sebastopol. It’s a blind curve with many deep potholes all across so that you cannot round the corner safely while keeping all wheels on the ground. To be fair, the holes were sort of patched last year, but the temporary fill didn’t have a chance.

Todd Road is by far the most suicidal. Going from Stoney Pt. Rd. to the entrance to 101. Driving down it in a car makes you wonder if you’ll ever get there, let alone a bike rider. No street lights, and 3-5 foot ditches on either side. If you don’t stray over the white line (on the right side) for a fraction of a second, in the ditch you go.

    ive seen it alot.
It’s super stressful- I use this road due to work, but am stressed out before getting into my car., knowing I have to tackle this nightmare

Please add Tilton Rd, Sebastopol to the list of worst roads (currently unmaintained). The road is only 1.5 lanes wide, so you are frequently taking both sides of the road in an effort to dodge the unfilled potholes. At the corner of Bodega Hwy and Tilton the road is so bumpy you have to slow way down (less than 5) or once you hit your brakes to stop, you may bounce over the road moguls right onto the busy Bodega Hwy. Lowered cars don’t have a chance on this road!

As a former resident in Sonoma County for 40 years I well remember all these roads being exactly as depicted. Some are so deep they have a gift shop at the bottom.
Where I live now we get our main road repaved every year so driving the 26 miles from our town to the next city is a joy. It’s like a bowling alley. Sorry I’m not disclosing the location.
    Have fun.

BRUSH CREEK! Between Hwy 12 & Montecito Blvd. Although not a long stretch of road, many use as a cut-through when THEY’RE IN A HURRY. As someone who needs use of this road daily I beg you: Please: Do not speed on this road—do not tail gate with your high-beams on, because the care in front of you already has the road lit up with theirs. –do not ride your bicyle on this road, unless you have a designated lane.—and please, pease, please….use your blinkers. There are very few places here to pull over and get out of your way. It is full of pot hole, blind turns, & bambis. P.S. whatever road you’re on, please be mindful of your hgh-beams to on-coming traffic.

Sebastopol’s “Hurlbut Rd” (off High School Rd) is horrible…hills and all. The name of this road tells you what it does to your body while driving on it.

We were considering buying a home on Hurlbut, but the road was too torn up—and that was back in ’94—it hasn’t been fixed since then!

In reviewing the comments, Sebastopol roads come up frequently…does the County just expect old hippies to put up with awful roads?

I agree wholeheartedly on the backroads. They are absolute $%#&.

As for Santa Rosa, Chanate Rd between Franklin and Mendocino is awful.

An honorable mention, though it’s not from disrepair, is the intersection between 3rd and 4th on Santa Rosa Ave. Who’s idea was it to use square cobblestones that run parallel to traffic? When I ride my motorcycle through there, I feel like I’m going to get bucked off!

Barnes Rd. is a major traffic cut through to River Rd. Most people drive it like it’s a paved road, which it is except for the hundreds of potholes and its narrowness. It even has one section that says “Narrow Road” which sandwiches you between two gulleys on either side and some homeowners driveways. This is not to mention the flooding that occurs after every big storm we have. After you hit the S.R. city limits it becomes nicely paved, but North of that, good luck.

Cannot believe Middle Two Rock Road isn’t mentioned yet. Just awful, – ALL of it. No more patching. Worst part is by the Liberty Duck Farm but it is ALL bad. Road bed shot. I know of one person who fell on a descent and died years ago and another that had a broken collar bone. Just awful!!

Also Peru Road in Sonoma that connect 8th ST East and 5th ST East – even with the lovely real estate in this area – the road is shameful.
