Of the 22 drivers arrested Saturday night at Petaluma’s latest DUI/license checkpoint, one was a 33-year-old Petaluma man who had been convicted three times of DUI.

Petaluma Police Sgt. Ken Savano said Amador Fernandez Hernandez ignored stop signs at the checkpoint and an officer’s order to halt before finally stopping when a second officer flagged him down. Savano said Hernandez was arrested on suspicion of felony DUI after a test indicated his blood alcohol level was nearly three times the legal limit.

Savano said Hernandez was convicted of DUI in December 2003, September 2009 and October 2009. He said Hernandez is on DUI probation and his license is suspended. Previously, he had been ordered to drive his car only with an ignition interlock device to prevent him from driving while intoxicated, Savano said. The car he was driving Saturday belonged to a friend and didn’t have such a device, Savano said.

In addition to the DUI arrest, Hernandez was booked in to the Sonoma County Jail on suspicion of violation of DUI probation and driving on a suspended license. His bail was set at $30,000.

Of the other drivers arrested Saturday night, police said, one other was booked on a DUI charge, four on driving on a suspended license and 16 on driving without ever being issued a license. Two others were cited for allegedly having an expired license.

Savano said 3,036 vehicles passed through the checkpoint from 4:30 p.m. to 1 a.m. Sunday on Lakeville Highway at South McDowell Boulevard with 1,717 drivers being screened by officers for signs of DUI and driver’s license violations.
