Question:

I wonder why the intersection of Seventh Street and Mendocino Avenue does not have a green arrow light for left turns. Heading east; pretty bad. When one is crossing the street going west, say to the 7th Street garage, heaven help you! The drivers are so focused on turning left onto Mendocino towards College that they are totally oblivious to pedestrians. I have been crossing this intersection for 10 years- a couple of pretty close calls. I called Santa Rosa traffic folk and they literally laughed at my inquiry/complaint. Of all the intersections in Santa Rosa to not have a turn arrow — I don’t get it. I noticed in the last five years or so that many intersections were revamped with turn arrows; not just “left turn yield on green.” Thank you. Greer

Answer:

Santa Rosa’s traffic engineer, Robert Sprinkle, says he’ll take a look at your request. He says most of the downtown Santa Rosa intersections do not have turn lights and because the traffic lights are coordinated, a change at one intersection will affect the others. Among the things he will consider are the possible unification of Old Courthouse Square and number of accidents at Seventh and Mendocino.

He notes that if the City Council decides to unify Courthouse Square, the change will affect traffic throughout downtown, so he may wait to see what happens with that vote. But he says if the accident check shows a problem at Seventh and Mendocino, then that’ll prompt the city to move to make changes there.
