With dozens of accidents around the North Coast blamed on the rain, it’s time to slow down and be extra alert.

The first rains of the season always lead to more accidents because roads are slicker, partly due to oil built up on the pavement, and motorists aren’t used to driving in the rain, said CHP Officer Randy England of the Ukiah office.

The No. 1 tip to drive safely in the rain is to slow down, he said. How much depends on road conditions, traffic and the amount of rain falling, he said.

He also recommended that drivers:

–Be alert for hazards down the road.

–Avoid slamming on your brakes. Brake slowly.

–Use the 3-second rule to maintain enough distance between you and the vehicle in front of you. This gives you a greater safety cushion in case you have to stop quickly.

–Make sure your windshield wipers are in good condition.

–If it’s wet enough to use your wipers, turn your headlights on, even during the day.
