Parking fines are going up in Sonoma County this month because of a new state law.

The state budget legislation added $3 on each parking fine, with the money going to finance construction or remodeling of court facilities across the state. The $3 is on top of $9.50 already imposed by the state for each violation, for a total of $12.50.

The state fees are tacked onto parking fines charged by all local jurisdictions. The Santa Rosa City Council this week adopted a revised list of parking fines and penalties to accommodate the new state fee and published a list of the different parking violations and the fine for each.

In the fiscal year ending last June 30, Santa Rosa collected $859,485 for all parking fines.

As an example of what local governments charge for parking violations, here’s Santa Rosa’s list of violations and the fine for each. So $12.50 of each fine goes to the state and the rest to the city:

Santa Rosa officials noted that despite the $3 extra state surcharge, the city’s parkings fines remain lower than those charged by Sonoma County, Healdsburg, Petaluma, Sonoma, Santa Rosa Junior College and Sonoma State University.

The extra fee could generate the state $108,000 to $132,000 from Santa Rosa parking tickets alone, the city said, noting the actual amount likely will be less because some tickets are dismissed and others go unpaid.
