The CHP is stepping up its patrols this New Year’s weekend.

Starting at 6 p.m. Friday and continuing through midnight Sunday, extra officers will be out statewide, including on the North Coast, to watch for DUI suspects and drivers violating traffic laws.

The CHP had similar extra patrols during Christmas weekend that resulted in 658 DUI arrests statewide, down from 1,104 in Christmas 2009. For the Bay Area, DUI arrests were 115 this year compared to 195 last year.

Traffic deaths were way down this year: 4 statewide compared to 22 a year ago, the CHP said.
