Here’s a question from a Road Warrior reader:

Question: When you’re traveling north on Santa Rosa Avenue and come to the stoplight at Kawana Springs Road, there are two lanes going straight. A lot of cars pull up alongside the far right lane and turn right. Is that legal? I see people do this all day long! Jessica

Answer: Yes, says Santa Rosa Police Officer Chris Morrison, an accident investigator in the traffic unit.

She says there’s a bike lane on the right side of Santa Rosa Avenue, and motorists are allowed to use it to turn right as long as they don’t enter the bike lane more than 200 feet from the corner. It’s a ticket if you do enter more than 200 feet away.

Morrison says the state vehicle code requires right turns to be done as far right as practical on a road, thus requiring motorists to drive into bike lanes to make the turn.

But watch out for bicyclists!
