Local police are cracking down today on drivers who not going hands-free with cellphones or are texting.

It’s part of a month-long, zero-tolerance campaign by dozens of police agencies statewide to ticket drivers who are being distracted by using their cellphones, texting or even such things as eating or grooming. Most police agencies have joined in on specifically designated days, and today’s effort covers most of the Bay Area.

Santa Rosa police today plan to have about 10 officers focused on distracted drivers, Sgt. Rich Celli said.

Other local police agencies also will be participating in the crackdown today, although CHP Officer Jon Sloat said the CHP has been cracking down month long.

The first two crackdown periods were April 4-5 and April 14.

CHP stats show that Santa Rosa police issued a total of 258 tickets for April 4-5 and 37 for April 14. Sonoma police reported issuing 41 tickets for distracted driving so far this month, with most of the citations for cellphones.

For cellphone use, fines are $160 ($20 base fine plus $140 in various county and state fees) for the first offense in Sonoma County and $280 for subsequent violations.
