If you drive by yourself in car-pool lanes in your hybrid car during commute hours, enjoy it while you can.

The DMV is mailing out 85,000 letters to hybrid car owners who have yellow stickers on their cars allowing them to use car-pool lanes, warning them that that privilege ends June 30.

The Legislature in 2004 created the yellow sticker program for hybrids that met the state’s strict partial zero emissions standards and that got 45 mpg or greater.

The state is working on the next car-pool sticker program, and the DMV says it’s expected to start sometime next year and will cover cars that meet even tougher pollution standards. The DMV says as many as 40,000 vehicles are expected to be covered, but the specific types have yet to be identified.
