It’s Cinco de Mayo today, and police across Sonoma County will be looking for drivers who’ve partied too much.

The county’s Avoid the 13 DUI Task Force, in cooperation with the county’s various police agencies, plans extra patrols with the primary purpose of arresting DUI drivers. The added enforcement is being funded by a grant from the state Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Petaluma Sgt. Ken Savano, who coordinates the Avoid the 13 Task Force, said his department alone will have seven extra officers on DUI-lookout duty today.

The task force recommends that party hosts:

–Arrange rides home for those drinking.

–Pick a designated driver.

–Limit drinks to your guests or patrons. Don’t serve more than one or two over several hours.

–Reduce the amount of drinks at the party and provide plenty of food.

–Call 911 if you see possible DUI drivers.
