Caltrans next month is to start repaving Highway 101 in Marin County, from Highway 37 to the Civic Center in San Rafael, and drivers can expect lane closures.

“The pavement has deteriorated pretty badly over the past few years, and it’s become even more noticeable since we repaved 101 from the Civic Center down to central San Rafael,” Caltrans spokesman Robert Haus said.

The $14 million project is to start around the beginning of June and will be done at night, with lane and ramp closures as necessary.

During the week, crews will start at 7 p.m. for southbound lanes and 9 p.m. for northbound and will stop by 5 a.m. for southbound and 6 a.m. for northbound, Caltrans spokeswoman Traci Ruth said. On weekends, they will begin at 8 p.m. southbound and 10 p.m. northbound and stop by 10 a.m. in both directions.

As part of the project, Caltrans will use rubberized asphalt, which includes recycled tires in the mix.

“This project will make use of about 1,380 tons of tires that otherwise would wind up in a landfill,” Haus said. “That’s a win-win for everyone.”

This summer, Caltrans also will break ground on widening 101 in Marin from Highway 37 north to about Atherton Avenue in Novato.
