Whether you’re driving a big rig or just towing your boat or camper, you’ll be paying a higher toll to cross Bay Area bridges starting July 1.

The toll to cross the bridges, except the Golden Gate, will jump from $6 now for a three-axle vehicle or combination to $10.50, for four axles from $8.25 now to $14, for five axles from $11.25 now to $18, for six axles from $12 to $21 and for seven or more axles from $13.50 to $24.25. So if you’re towing your single-axle trailer with your two-axle car or pickup, you’ll have to pay the three-axle rate.

For the Golden Gate Bridge, the tolls will be $13 for three axles ($11.25 if you use FasTrak), $18 for four axles ($15 FasTrak), $22 for five axles ($18.75 FasTrak), $27 for six axles ($22.50 FasTrak) and $31 for seven or more axles ($26.25 FasTrak).

Tolls for the bridges, except the Golden Gate, will jump again on July 1, 2012, when the fee will be $5 per axle for vehicles or combinations of three axles or more. For the Golden Gate, the toll will rise to $6 per axle for three axles or more, with the rate being $5 an axle for those who use FasTrak.

In addition to the Golden Gate, seven state-owned bridges are involved: The Antioch, Benicia-Martinez, Carquinez, Dumbarton, Richmond-San Rafael, Bay Bridge and San Mateo-Hayward.

Once the 2012 toll increase takes effect, the added revenue for the state bridges is estimated at $140 million a year to be used to finance earthquake retrofits of the Antioch and Dumbarton bridges, to pay for increased debt costs and to make up for a revenue drop since 2003 as fewer drivers use the bridges.

State law requires bridge tolls be based on the number of axles.
