If you’re out and about Sunday, watch out for the 2,000-plus competitors running and bicycling in the 21st Avia Vineman Ironman 70.3 triathlon, which used to be called the Half Vineman. Some traffic delays are likely.

The bike course starts in Guerneville, goes to Healdsburg via Westside Road and Geyserville via Dry Creek Road before heading south through Alexander Valley Road over Chalk Hill Road to the Wikiup area before ending in Windsor. To help keep traffic and athletes apart, the CHP will have 30 officers assigned to intersections along the race courses, from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m., CHP Officer Jon Sloat said. The Vineman contracts with the CHP for the officers at a cost of $75 an hour for each officer, he said. Thirty officers each working 12-hour days at $75 an hour adds up to $27,000.

The full Vineman triathlon will be held July 30 in roughly the same areas.

Sloat says his advice to motorists is to avoid those areas Sunday and again July 30.

Here are specific roads that the CHP says will be affected:

–Old Redwood Highway at Shiloh Road.

–Aviation Boulevard to Airport Boulevard will be closed, and left turns from Airport onto Aviation will be prohibited. Avoid Skylane Boulevard at Shiloh Road, as well as Windsor Road near the high school, as lanes will be closed in that area.

–Starr Road from Reiman Lane to Mark West Station Road will be closed to northbound traffic. Mark West Station from Starr Road to Slusser Road will be closed to eastbound traffic. Northbound traffic on Slusser Road from River Road to Mark West Station will be closed. All of
Laughlin Road in the area of La Crema WInery will be closed during the event.
