Last year's worst road in Sonoma County was Irwin Lane, which is only 1.6 miles long
from Highway 12 north to Hall Road west of Santa Rosa but is full of potholes
and patches. Click to enlarge. Road Warrior photo

It’s time for the Road Warrior’s second-annual contest for readers to vote for the worst road in Sonoma County.

Vote by leaving a comment below telling us what that worst road is, or a particular stretch of that road, and explain why it’s so bad. It’s fine to list more than one, but only the first one named will be counted. Please vote only once.

All roads are eligible, except for Irwin Lane, which was last year’s winner — or, perhaps a better description, the loser. Irwin Lane, by the way, continues to waste away with new potholes and new patches. The county road department, responsible for Irwin, had said its budget crisis would prevent it from fixing up Irwin.

You have a week or so to vote, and then I’ll report the winner and runners-up. And I’ll call the city/county road department in charge of the worst road and check to see what it plans to do about the road.

    Frei Road.

  2. Lisa Hulette

The worst stretch of road is Green Hill road right off of Occidental Rd (about 2 mi west of 116)… It continues to be bad as it turns into Graton Road and onto Bohemian Highway.

The second worst road, which is really a close second, is Green Valley Rd near the cemetery adjacent o the Korbel Vineyard.

The choices are nearly endless, but I vote for Spring Hill Road in western Petaluma. Rode my bike on it today, beautiful views and ugly pavement.

    September 18th, 2011 5:46 pm

  4. Mary DeLoach

    It’s STILL Irwin Lane!

    September 18th, 2011 5:46 pm

  5. Kurt Matson

Ramal Rd. Between Duhig and 121. It’ll beat you to death.

    September 18th, 2011 5:47 pm

  6. Mike Greenlee

Chalk hill road between Windsor and Alexander Valley. It is extremely humped up in the middle and has grooves made by tires from years of use. Very hazardous for motorcycle riders.

    September 18th, 2011 5:48 pm

  7. Charlie

    Spring Hill

    September 18th, 2011 5:59 pm

The worst has got to be Hiway 12 between Sonoma and Santa Rosa. Bumpy and dangerous with beatiful scenery.

    September 18th, 2011 6:02 pm

  9. Regina

The worst road is BURBANK Avenue in Santa Rosa. Soooo many holes, horrible to drive on, it is a complete tire buster. Ridiculous.

    west sexxton

  11. Sandra Hollimon

Green Hill Road!!!! It just gets patched (badly) and has not been resurfaced (as far as I can tell) in at least 15 years.

    September 18th, 2011 6:06 pm

  12. Carey

Frei Road between Lynmar Winery and Guerneville Road will rattle your teeth. Toss up for second place is Bittner Road with innumerable potholes, mounded patches and sinking pavement threatening to slide down the steep embankment or Green Hill Road from Graton Road to Occidental Road.

    September 18th, 2011 6:06 pm

  13. Kathy

Worst road? Corby Ave between Baker and Hearn Ave. I was raised in that neighborhood and the county still has not repaved it! What a mess! This road has been the same pot-holed, badly patched up piece of road for years! Let’s stop working on roads that don’t need fixing and get to the ones that sorely need it!

    September 18th, 2011 6:16 pm

  14. Leroy

I won’t drive my classic Chevy pickup on Old Redwood before Penngrove anymore. Every time I go over some of those ruts, my truck feels as if it is going to shake apart. Once, going by the fire station, I lost an exhaust hanger. Bang! It went flying out from under my truck. Never again. That road kills lowered classics. Heck, even in my regular pickup, it shakes the heck out of it.

    September 18th, 2011 6:18 pm

  15. Ian

Frei Road. I hate how bumpy this road is!

    September 18th, 2011 6:22 pm

Milbrae Ave. in Santa Rosa, off of Stony Point Road. Full of pot holes and patches, the road is narrow with no shoulder. Posted Speed limit is 40 miles per hour (Crazy)! Heavily used to reach the Highway, Walmart and Rohnert park.

    September 18th, 2011 6:26 pm

  17. John

Old Adobe Road, between Petaluma Hill Road and Corona Road.

    September 18th, 2011 6:28 pm

  18. Megan

Corby avenue, aston avenue, west 3rd @ stony point… i’m sure i can come up with others

    September 18th, 2011 6:29 pm

  19. Monica

The whole length of Blackney Road in Sebastopol, from Watertrough to the end, is a nightmare of holes that will have you swerving all over the road to avoid them.

    September 18th, 2011 6:31 pm

  20. Marty

All of the roads are bad!

    September 18th, 2011 6:40 pm

    September 18th, 2011 6:43 pm

  22. Boomer

Barnett Valley Rd. between Burnside and Jonive. It does not get any worse than that, does it?

    September 18th, 2011 6:50 pm

  23. Tim

Jonive Rd in West County Sebastopol is extremely messed up. The bumps and potholes are so bad that it actually makes my pickup bounce sideways when it encounters one of these potholes. The 2nd worst is Bitner Rd. This road is going to slide into the woods if it not taken care of soon.

    September 18th, 2011 6:59 pm

  24. Dan Hardin

Faught Road. Looks like testing grounds for cluster munitions. Would be one of the few stretches of asphalt that would be improved by the county’s plans to revert roads to dirt.

    September 18th, 2011 7:00 pm

  25. Mike Fitzpatrick

    Wood Road, Fulton, CA
Is the worst road in Sonoma County
Huge chunks wash out every winter. Many are left unrepaired for several months.

    September 18th, 2011 7:01 pm

  26. Shannon Roberts

Old Redwood Hwy from Cotati through Penngrove.. has been neglected for probably over a decade! the potholes eat tires at a rapid pace.

    September 18th, 2011 7:13 pm

  27. D.B.

Jacobsen Lane off Old Adobe Road, between Petaluma Hill Road and Corona Road. Needs resurfacing and extra widening on northwest shoulder.

    September 18th, 2011 7:17 pm

  28. Ken Morrison

Fallon Rd., From Valley ford Rd to Marin county line.

    September 18th, 2011 7:20 pm

  29. Beth McCarthy

The worst? Corby Avenue between Baker Avenue and Hearn Avenue. My teeth clack together when I drive that road!

    September 18th, 2011 7:24 pm

  30. W

West 9th street, between Simpson and Stony Point, westbound lanes. My teeth almost rattle out of my head as I ride my bike over the uneven surface. The city takes time and money to rope off the lanes around the median trees for the darn egrets to nest, but doesn’t seem to care about the humans who use the road every day.

    September 18th, 2011 7:24 pm

  31. Anne

Old Red Hwy from just north of Penngrove to Petaluma city limits — numerous bumps and humps and layers of pothole patches, in both directions, and way too much traffic to neglect it.

    September 18th, 2011 7:33 pm

  32. E

Jonive Rd., west of Sebastopol, has so many eroding patched holes, some the size of a kiddie pool, that in sections it’s really a one-lane road. Despite this, it’s a popular connection between Bodega Hwy. and Occidental Rd because of its location. When you encounter a bicyclist and an oncoming car in one of these narrow sections, you’re faced with the choice of a bone-rattling ride through a series of potholes or a potentially fatal collision. Not great, especially in the fog.

    September 18th, 2011 7:39 pm

  33. Pete

Sonoma Mtn. Rd between Bennett valley Rd. and warm Springs. The Co. made it worse by removing 1/8 mile of asphalt to experiment. REAL bad road.

    September 18th, 2011 7:41 pm

  34. josh

Green Hill rd is the worst…high traffic…everyone rides the middle…

    September 18th, 2011 7:42 pm

  35. ladybug12

Definitely Green Valley Road just west of the cemetery where the creek floods over 200 feet of pavement every winter. That patch never has enough time to mend! It seems the creek could be better managed to avoid the flooding and destruction of the road also. Just thinking with my fingers here…

    September 18th, 2011 7:50 pm

  36. Trey

West Sexton in Sebastopol is the worst I have seen…

    September 18th, 2011 7:52 pm

  37. Niko

It really doesn’t matter what road we say here because:

    1. Most of Sonoma County’s smaller roads SUCK!

    2. At this point, the county won’t fix them, because the county SUCKS!

    3. The people of Sonoma County are all too distracted to do anything about it… which totally SUCKS!

    September 18th, 2011 7:53 pm

  38. K

Sonoma Mountain road, by far is the worst.

    September 18th, 2011 7:57 pm

  39. Greg

East Todd Road. The entire surface consists of patch.

    September 18th, 2011 8:07 pm

  40. billie

Just like last year i am going to vote for Burnside Road above Sebastopol – made worse by the `ditches’ recently dug by the county that leaves no room to move over – now it is not only full of holes and bad patches – if you encounter a semi or piskup with duelies you up the perverbial creek!

    September 18th, 2011 8:09 pm

  41. MB

Jonive running between hwy12 and occidental is truly obnoxious.

    September 18th, 2011 8:18 pm

  42. Ali

Green Valley Road. Lots of potholes. And it floods at the S-turn a couple miles into it off the 116 every winter. Anyone who lives on the road has to reroute to the other end of the road to get home during the rainy season.

    September 18th, 2011 8:19 pm

  43. collette

SPRING HILL ROAD, outside Petaluma. Seriously, when I try to ride my bike down the road, the bicycle comes to a complete stop unless I keep pedaling, hard. It’s riddled with pieces of chopped up road all over it, probably from trucks and other delivery vehicles. Super unsafe. My bike hit one of those road boulders once and I crashed.

    September 18th, 2011 8:21 pm

  44. c.brown

    Frei Rd

    September 18th, 2011 8:27 pm

  45. Nate Schmidt

Fort Ross road just north of Cazadero, is notorious for having sinkhole size potholes. It takes the county at least two months to finally fix them after a call has been made. If you don’t believe me see for yourself

    September 18th, 2011 8:32 pm

  46. Mike

Any road in west Petaluma, however, Spring Hill is the worst. I live half the year out of state and I can say, beyond a doubt, California roads (Sonoma County) are “third world”. There is no reason for it.

    September 18th, 2011 8:36 pm

  47. louis

Caulfield Lane in Petaluma between McDowell and Crinella – I feel like I am riding in an Army Tank!!

    September 18th, 2011 8:52 pm

  48. Tom

FALLON ROAD. I’m surprised I haven’t seen more accidents due to vehicles swerving suddenly to avoid unexpected potholes, or because of the holes themselves.

    September 18th, 2011 8:54 pm

  49. Catherine

Another Faught Road vote, it’s the worst! Between Shiloh Rd. and Carriage Ln. Pot holes on top of pot holes.

    September 18th, 2011 8:55 pm

  50. Easy E.

TILTON ROAD! Rough. Steep. Lots of vehicles. Hairpin turns. Worse than west sexton! :)

    September 18th, 2011 8:59 pm

  51. A.B.

Spring Hill Rd, Petaluma or Middle Two Rock Rd, Petaluma

    September 18th, 2011 9:05 pm

  52. A.B.

Old Adobe between corona and penngrove is another one thats terrible.

    September 18th, 2011 9:07 pm

  53. galaxytow

piner rd from fulton rd to olivet

    September 18th, 2011 9:17 pm

  54. Sleepless on Stony Point

Stony Point Road from Todd to Highway 116. Why? The “Chip Seal” coating they applied several years ago- It’s the noisiest junk they’ve ever come up with. They had a newly paved road, and then a few years later, for some unknown reason, they covered it with chip seal.

The resulting increase in traffic noise is maddening. You can’t even stand in your yard and have a normal conversation anymore, or even leave your windows open. Sounds like a freeway running through your bedroom at night. The decibel level is well over 90 at times. We’ve complained many times to the Dept. of Public Works- They all agree that chip seal is much louder than asphalt, but that’s too bad…

    September 18th, 2011 9:22 pm

  55. Tim Wallace

Stony Point, between Sebastopol Rd. and Hearn. Potholes, lots of patched potholes, two lanes, very busy, no shoulders. It would be great to see it four lanes down to at least Bellvue, but the paving over of what’s there would be great.

    September 18th, 2011 9:28 pm

  56. TC

Llano Rd between Todd and Hwy 116. Real tire-poppin’, rim-bustin’, shock-buster.

    September 18th, 2011 9:32 pm

  57. JD

Post St. in Petaluma South of City Hall. Though few drive on it, it is by far the worst. I am a courrier and drive all over the county, trust me on this! (though I have some good runner ups(in fact many), including last years winner).

    September 18th, 2011 9:35 pm

  58. molly

Sonoma Mountain Road, my husband drives a tow truck, that was the worst for him.

    September 18th, 2011 9:41 pm

  59. Sonoma Mountain

Sonoma Mountain Road is a total mess- lawsuit waiting to happen. Anyone gets in a crash there- the County is liable! Notice has been given- again!

    September 18th, 2011 9:48 pm

  60. Bob Raines

Chalk Hill Road is so bad that the bikers have to spray paint warnings on the road. Spring Hill is a mess, too.

Bottom line, though, is if we want the roads repaired, we need to pay for it. Or give up on another service. Things are too far gone, across the county, in many jurisdictions, to pretend that someone is just going to come in and fix it while we’re sleeping. It’s going to take more than a poll and some comment/flames.

    September 18th, 2011 9:48 pm

  61. Sly

Definately Ramal Rd in the Carneros; especially bad because as soon as you enter Napa County it becomes one of the smoothest roads in the state.

    September 18th, 2011 9:49 pm

  62. Me

Blackney Road in Sebastopol. It has pot holes everywhere and instead of filling the holes then spray paint circles around them.

    September 18th, 2011 9:59 pm

  63. Jim

Austin Creek Road, between Cazadero Highway and Cazadero. No less than four active slides, potholes galore, one section had the “flooded” signs taken down three weeks ago. Did I mention the one lane bridge that constantly is in need of repair?

    September 18th, 2011 10:05 pm

    September 18th, 2011 10:54 pm

  66. Nick D

A pattern is forming…all West County roads are bad and neglected. Green Hill and Green Valley, Frei, Graton, Ferguson, middle two rock, AWFUL! Come on Sonoma County….

    September 18th, 2011 11:00 pm

  67. Karas

Brookwood between Aston and Bennett Valley Rd. There are no street lights, no bike lanes, no shoulder and it’s a long straight away that people speed on. With all the foot traffic at fairground events, you’d think it might be some sort of priority for pedestrian safety. They’ve done some patch work on the major potholes, but overall, it’s only safe in the middle of the night.

    September 18th, 2011 11:11 pm

  68. MamaK

Every single rd, aside from Hwy 101 and Hwy 12. My shock and aliment are horribly ruined because of Sonoma county. Funny how you can go from Sonoma county to Marin county or Sonoma county to Napa county and NOTICE when you cross that county line because of the road.

    September 18th, 2011 11:15 pm

  69. punished by potholes

My vote goes to Warm Springs Rd between Santa Rosa and Glen Ellen. That has got to be one of the worst roads around, it’s like driving on railroad tracks! They continue to ‘work’ on it, but it just gets worse and worse…

    September 18th, 2011 11:41 pm

  70. Bear

    Jonive Rd. Bumpity Bump!

    September 19th, 2011 12:18 am

  71. RC

They keep trying to fix the potholes, but that never lasts over a month. That’s on Piner, west of Fulton. I have to hug the center line to keep from splattering my suspension on those nasty potholes. Galaxytow has it right.

    September 19th, 2011 12:58 am

  72. James

All of Adobe Road. Goodbye front end allignment.

    September 19th, 2011 1:46 am

  73. D.Whitley

Mostly the old back roads to places i would say! then ones with pot holes, slides, flooding, narrowness ect. evan the citys roads and intersection have there problem..

Peace and love to all The lost ones .

    September 19th, 2011 2:48 am

  74. John

Sonoma Mountain Road between Bennett Valley Road and Pressley.

If the oak trees weren’t holding together one section about 3/4 mile from BV Road, the road would slide down the hill into a house. 1/10th inch of rain will create dozens of potholes. Even my 4 wheel drive truck complains about this road.

    September 19th, 2011 3:14 am

  75. Mike

Calistoga Road to Porter Canyon Road, a mess and dangerous because of the pot holes on curves.

    September 19th, 2011 4:24 am

  76. Tom Kirkland

nothings worse than Carroll Road in Bloomfield.

    September 19th, 2011 5:21 am

  77. julie smith

    Lakevill hwy the lights are
too long and the cars take
    off way to slowly

    September 19th, 2011 5:24 am

  78. Phyllis

    Irwin lane, & Frei Rd

    September 19th, 2011 5:46 am

  79. Randy

Calistoga Rd. The County tried to fix it, but missed the worse part.

    September 19th, 2011 5:58 am

  80. C D Auzston

Rio Nido Road from River Road to Armstrong Woods Road. It seems the County Works people who fix roads stop working on any roads west of Korbel. Most of the roadways in Rio Nido need total repaving…

    September 19th, 2011 6:11 am

  81. Robert Cassero

Has anybody been on Fitch Mountain Road in Healdsburg lately? Absolutely THE worst road in Sonoma County. Just as the city road end it becomes very obvious..out of site, out of mind. Check out the north side of Fitch, before Villa Chanticleer, That multiple patched part of the road will probably fall down the side of the mountain this year, after the next big rain.

    September 19th, 2011 6:14 am

  82. Jeff

Bartleson Rd. Small dead end Rd. is all patch work. I lived on this road for 49 years and the county has never re done the road.

    September 19th, 2011 6:34 am

  83. Marlene W. Stein

Sonoma Mountain Road, off Bennett Valley Road is a hazard. The huge pot holes have already caused me to have two flat tires in one month. Cyclists are forced to walk, not ride their bikes. A portion was deliberately destroyed for an “experiment” and the town has not even watered down the enormous dust– berry crops are ruined, we cannot leave windows open and my husband’s asthma is worse.

    September 19th, 2011 6:48 am

  84. Elizabeth

Sonoma Mountain Road is dangerous with many potholes and poorly filled potholes, also areas that look like the road will wash away in the next big winter storm. There there is the the stretch where the county took the pavement off. Ugh.

On the other hand, Bennett Valley Road has a stretch near Santa Rosa that has been repaved and drivers are cheering!

    September 19th, 2011 6:51 am

  85. Shelley Medeiros

Springhill Road in Petaluma is the worst

    September 19th, 2011 7:06 am

  86. Cathie

Green Hill Rd. and I agree with the comments left by Josh, Sandra and Lisa!

    September 19th, 2011 7:18 am

  87. Jack

The river road going into Guerneville Ca. and also Rio Nido Road…..

    September 19th, 2011 7:31 am

  88. Tony

My vote definitately goes to Western Road in Petaluma. Unbelievable, I was riding my motorcycle there over the weekened, and one of several potholes the size of Mars almost swallowed me and my bike up. Crazy

    September 19th, 2011 7:34 am

  89. Jerry

A section of really bad road is Lynch Road in Sebastopol between Gravenstein Highway and McFarlane Avenue. I think there is one three foot section which does not have pot holes or has been patched.

    September 19th, 2011 7:37 am

  90. Bill price

The section of Sonoma mountain road near the top where the county tore up the asphalt and left a rutted dirt section that is going to erode mud into the nearby creek, an illegal situation. It is also dangerous to all the cyclists on the road.

    September 19th, 2011 7:40 am

  91. Bob Marino

Bellvue Ave., between Dutton and Stony Point Rd. NASTY!

    September 19th, 2011 7:48 am

  92. anna

Can’t remember the last time Frei Rd. was even patched and Spring Hill School Rd. is a close second.

    September 19th, 2011 7:54 am

  93. Paul

I must say some of the worst have to be Irwin Lane, Willowside Road, West Third St. through downtown Santa Rosa, and Hwy 101 through Petaluma it seems like the traffic gets worse everyday and the part of Corby Avenue between the Corby Ave exit and Hearn Ave exit..

    September 19th, 2011 7:59 am

  94. Alan Watt

Cunningham Road, off of Bloomfield. Unbelievable!

    September 19th, 2011 8:08 am

  95. James Ric

Really poor road condition on Napa Rd betweem Broadway and Fifth St West in Sonoma. Road has been a mess for years. Third world condition for a so called tourist attraction community for all to see.

    September 19th, 2011 8:28 am

  96. Mary

Old Redwood Highway between Cotati and Petaluma, going past the Green Mill through Penngrove past the Twin Oaks. Especially bad near the Penngrove Fire Station. Nobody wants to fix it. Ugghh!

    September 19th, 2011 8:33 am

  97. Alastair

Chalk Hill Road has potholes galore and often feels like you are on a rollarcoaster. Faught Road also no treat.

    September 19th, 2011 8:44 am

  98. Sharon

billie, ditches need cleaned for better drainage which keeps the road from degrading so fast. Thank you county workers for the Burnside ditches cleaning. The Barnett Valley road-Burnside-Bloomfield-Canfield-Blank route is the worst for us. Sometimes we drive through Sebastopol, down 116 then back onto Blank.

    September 19th, 2011 8:47 am

  99. Back Road Commuter

Sonoma Mountain Road is the worst. Try to share this road with a bicycle rider and it is a disaster waiting to happen!

    September 19th, 2011 8:52 am

  100. annette

Porter Creek! Mark West gets repairs and Petrified Forest as well but the space between them – Porter Creek remains a mess of pot holes with nasty incorrectly banked turns. The amount of traffic; big rigs, commuters and tourists make it a difficult, dangerous and a challenging road to drive.

    September 19th, 2011 8:54 am

  101. T Warner

    Frei Road is AWFUL

    September 19th, 2011 8:55 am

  102. Nancy

Middle Rincon Rd from Sunshine Ave to Badger Rd, Santa Rosa

    September 19th, 2011 8:58 am

  103. Tim

My first thoughts were Frei Rd and Bay Hill Rd (by Bodega Bay). Both are shortcuts, but their both so bumpy and pot hole ridden, I won’t take either. But then I remembered Bohemian Hwy between Main and Fir in Monte Rio. Possibly the worst road in any county.

    September 19th, 2011 9:01 am

  104. bluz

Burbank Avenue, especially with all the heavy traffic and big trucks coming in to build the new school. Very rough road, narrow, no sidewalks for walking, super dangerous!! Has a 25mph speed limit which is largely ignored and not enforced.

    September 19th, 2011 9:27 am

  105. Vicki

    Sonoma Mountain Parkway in Petaluma!

West Petaluma – spring hill rd. – about the third world roads in So. County – isn’t that a result of geology things underground ? maybe we require special rd construction methods like the autobahn – cause we’re special .

    September 19th, 2011 9:37 am

  107. LINDSEY

Stony Point Rd between Hearn and Sebastopol Rd. Absolutly terrible.

Without a doubt Sonoma Mountain Road. UPS even tells me they do not want to make deliveries on that road; parts of it are no longer paid and create horrendous dust; the rest is full of pot holes and no center line.

Sonoma Mountain Road in Santa Rosa and Glen Ellen is the worst.if the potholes do not ruin your tires, the part that has been turned into gravel will. The gravel portion spews dust and dirt that ruins grapes and hampers breathing.

My vote is for Middle Two Rock Rd. outside Petaluma. Second runner up is Eucalyptus Rd., where the potholes can swallow a truck tire! The damage that has been done to all our cars is ridiculous! With rainy season coming we are all in trouble.

Lichau Road gets my vote. The lower portion is crumbling into the earth. In winter, multiple potholes, cars serving into the opposite lane to avoid them…scary driving.

Ludwig Rd between S Wright and Stony Point Rd. A lot of NW Santa Rosa residents use this as a quicker way of getting on to Stony Point to go south, but everyone has to dodge the numerous and huge potholes like driving in a mine field!

    Bay Hill Rd
Has beautiful views at coastal end, but don’t drive this unless you have a sturdy truck. The pot holes are huge.

  118. Sy Walton

Rio Nido Road between River Road and Armstrong Woods Road is by far one of the worst roads in the County. I Don’t’ think there is any original road showing through the patches in some spots. Not only that, it has blind one lane corners that are quite dangerous. Most of the roads in Rio Nido are paved-over horse trails that have never been repaved since they were originally developed. I wonder where all of that Tax Money went to take care of our roads the past 50 years.

  119. Ken Kimari

Lichau Rd has my vote. Pavement broken up throughout. No maintenance of shoulders which allows water to run down road and undermine pavement. Numerous pot holes patched by county from time to time but new ones keep cropping up. My alignment shop loves me and all the residents who use that road!

    September 19th, 2011 11:14 am

  120. Al

My deepest sympathies for those who have to drive on roads other than Lichau but there is no question that Lichau is the worst on the planet. The photo above gives a hint as to how bad it is but one has to recognize that following the slightest drizzle or fog-fallout each of the patches shown becomes a foot-deep hole. Within minutes. The road is not crowned so every drop settles in a low place and the pavement is blasted out by vehicles using the road. I’ve been to Europe and know how roads in civilized countries CAN be.

Lichau Road in Penngrove by a mile. It has been horrible for years and so dangerous when people drive in the middle or other side just to avoid its’ roughness. County fills in with asphalt after rains and makes it not only worse, but now your car picks up all sorts of debris. Not only do residents use this road, but bicycles, walkers, runners and anyone looking for the view. It is truly a disappointment.

    September 19th, 2011 11:16 am

Lichau Rd. is falling apart. It dangerous and it wears out cars especially tires.

    September 19th, 2011 11:17 am

  123. Jeff S.

Lichau Road is the very worst. It looks like a painter splashed paint all over it with the myriad of patches it has undergone. It feel like driving on a cobblestone street with a few cobblestones missing every few feet. Unfortunately i drive my bike down once and awhile and even after a streneous ride the only part of my body that hurts are my forearms from the vibration of the road. If there is a worst road it would have to be a dirt one.

  124. Lesa

Chico Avenue is the worst! My family and I ride, or I should say Try to ride our bikes on this road to our kids school. Recently I crashed really bad when my front tire stuck in a hole and flipped me over the handle bars. Nothing broken but numerous cuts, bruises and alot of pain.

Our road is so bad, you can barely walk on it without getting a sprained or twisted ankle because of how bad the condition of the road is.

    Help! Please fix our road.

    September 19th, 2011 11:21 am

  125. Terry

Lichau Road–the pot hole “repairs” create bumps in the street, and many of them redevelop as pot holes anyway, and at the top of the hill, it gets really bad

    September 19th, 2011 11:24 am

  126. Michael Rosen

Lichau Rd is definitely the worst.
Scared for the children that have to take that little school bus that can barely make it.

Lichau Rd. in Penngrove is the worst road in Sonoma count! Potholes on top of pot holes…. it doesn’t stop…. the repaving does not work and only makes the road even more uneven. Lichau Rd. is terrible for cars driving it everyday.

ADOBE ROAD on the Penngrove side is rididulous! The holes and patches are so bad that your car is forced into the other lane or the ditch sometimes!! The city paved a minor stretch of Adobe but of course left the worst part untouched!

  132. Festus

You’re right KD . Eucalyptus is HORRIBLE, and so is Liberty Rd. Might as well be dirt! And really, do we need to pay for the street sweeper on Stony Point? Park that thing and put the guy to work FIXING roads.

St. Helena Rd. This road is narrow with many potholes. People drive from St Helena to Santa Rosa in their sports cars, luxury cars and motorcycles after wine tasting with little regard to the hazards.

  134. jazz

Lichau Rd is a huge pot hole, and you generally have to drive on the wrong side of the road to avoid having your tires go into one of the many potholes and that is a dangerous proposition, it has so many patchwork temporary fixes but they are small band aids trying to stop arterial bleeding…

Definitely Spring Hill Road west of Petaluma! There are deep pot holes that have not been filled and sections of the road that have completely lost their surface leaving only gravel and dirt. In one place half the road is missing!

  138. Lynn

Mark West Springs Road….not because of potholes (it was recently paved) but because people drive much faster than the 45 mph speed limit (why are Sonoma County drivers so agressive?!) and because of all the darn gravel trucks (200 per day?)

Lichau Road. While many of the county’s roads are in dire condition, Lichau Road remains one of the worst. The patches on patches over patches continuously fail, creating a hazardous condition for drivers and cyclists.

To me it’s all right there under the County’s nose. Try Ventura Ave. going south from Bicentennial for a couple blocks. If the County can’t fix what’s right there at the County Adninistration Center, how can they fix anything else?

Second, I agree with all the ohthers except the post who gave Hwy 101 a pass. Traveled 101 through Rohnert Park & Cotati recently?

Monte Rio has the worst roads. Main St and Starrett Hill Dr are two but there are many others. These roads have not been maintained for years. Both Monte Rio and Rio Nido roads (as stated in other comments) are in serious need of immediate repair.

Elphick Rd. in Sebastopol…not only are there potholes and no shoulder, people speed down the hill and around corners here like it’s a freedway. It’s a nightmare for pedestrians and families. I love where we live but I couldn’t live here forever, because the road is so treacherous.

    September 19th, 2011 12:59 pm

Cunningham Rd off of Bloomfield in Sebastopol is by far the worst they constantly are patching the potholes which seems to make it worse. In the winter time it is honestly dangerous with deep ditches and many treacherous potholes!

  149. Sammy

I would vote for Barnes Road, Off River road In santa rosa. I couldnt even tell you last time that i saw a patch done on any of the holes. Not to mention that you nearly hit a car everytime that you try to avoid one of these pot holes. Maybe instead of focusing on building new roads they can focus on fixing the old ones FIRST. I would hate to be a motorcycle rider in Sonoma County. No matter what road you are talking about it is all pretty much the same thing. POT HOLES & CRACKS.

    September 19th, 2011 1:19 pm

LICHAU ROAD is an accident that has happened again and again. It’s the most dangerous road in Northern California.

I don’t think the county will do anything about it until they are sued in a gigantic wrongful death lawsuit. It would be a lot cheaper to fix it before that happens. I believe it will happen, I’ve seen too many vehicles being pulled up after being forced over a cliff. I’ve heard of too many vehicles being damaged after being forced into ruts or bouncing over and into huge pot holes and ridges.

LICHAU ROAD is definitely the worst.

OLD REDWOOD HIGHWAY from Penngrove to Petaluma. Heavy commuter traffic is wearing down the road, not to mention my car. Sometimes I take alternate routes just to save my car the wear & tear.

  154. Oski

This is an easy one for me. Keiser Ave, which runs from Snyder Ln. to Petaluma Hill Road in Rohnert Park. It is a shortcut and a quick getaway from Lawrence E. Jones Middle school, but it is all chewed up!

    September 19th, 2011 1:30 pm

  155. Hanya

Willowside Road between Hall Road and Piner Road. It is not only filled with potholes, but the road is banked to make your car want to go off to the side, then you get bumped back inward toward an oncoming car. There is a school there and then the people parking along the roadway to access Santa Rosa Creek. Teeth chattering, car fracturing, Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride.

    September 19th, 2011 1:36 pm

  156. Josh

LICHAU ROAD is a disasterous mess of potholes, ruts and ridges. With the multiple chances of being run off the road and over a cliff it’s also the most dangerous road in the county.

  157. Concerned Resident

Stoney Point for its engineering nightmares! More wrecks there than Hwy. 12 now I bet! People cannot get out of roads that lead in to it or their driveways and they do crazy stuff! Stop signs are barely visible…and I will vote for Burbank Street as the best potholes! And with that school going in it will only get way worse!!

Lichau road is pothole city. A collage of patches with new holes added daily. I think it works only for the cows who cross it to get from one pasture to another. Torn up when a new cable line was laid and then repaired as little as they could get by with.

    September 19th, 2011 1:57 pm

Milbrae east of Stony Point. Bumpy and major ditches on either side. No place to pull off if you’re faced with an ambulance coming straight at you (as happened to me-ended up in somebody’s front yard).

    September 19th, 2011 2:28 pm

  163. Starr Rohrman

Lichau Road gets my vote. I have driven the road for over 40 years and it has not been resurfaced in recent memory. The upper parts of Lichau are narrow and treacherous. Cattle roam the road causing land slides and paths that run like rivers during the rainy season. The entire length of the road is full of pot holes that are never repaired properly and don’t last. During the rainy season springs come up under the road and it raises up – it literally moves as the water comes up under it. At the steepest point there is an unguarded drop off that will eventually take a life or wash out ,stranding those above and below. None of us owns a helicopter. Then it really will be the county’s very costly problem.

  164. Fix The Roads

Highway 12 Santa Rosa to Sonoma. Too narrow, too much traffic and two lanes. This is turned into a commute road in the mornings and evenings. No longer the beautiful road through the vineyards. Too much serious traffic.

  165. john De Castro

Lichau road js so bad people are not driving on westbound lane any more. They are crossing the center line and driving on the eastbound lane until they reach Roberts road.

    September 19th, 2011 2:58 pm

  166. Indo

Barnes Road heading NORTH to River Road. The pot holes are deep and road is too narrow for the amount of traffic it gets. Even the CHP posts up on that stretch to nab speeders each week.

    September 19th, 2011 3:04 pm

  167. Copper98

I agree that Barnes Rd is one of the worst. Just about any road in Sonoma County is horrible. You definitely can tell when you drive back into Sonoma County by the way your tires want to jump off your car. The don’t need road signs telling where the county lines are. There is also a small stretch of Old Redwood Hwy at the intersection of Eastside Rd that rattles the car so bad until you come to a stop at the stop sign.

    September 19th, 2011 3:08 pm

  168. Donald

I vote for Lichau Road especially the lower part. It is practically nothing but patches now and as soon as it rains the ineffective patches turn into potholes again. I’ve already had a new tire destroyed by the potholes. I can’t believe it’s cost effective to keep patching rather than applying an overlay surface. (Presely road, nearby, recently had areas repaired with an overlay surface and it seems to be doing fine.)

    September 19th, 2011 3:11 pm

  169. Tom

I second Lichau Road – it looks like a minefield! They patch Presley/Roberts Road that it runs into, but won’t pave the lower part of Lichau which at this point looks like solid patches! This road was never built correctly, so it continues to degrade since it doesn’t have the appropriate substructure. It’s dangerous as people pay no attention to the middle line – they are too busy trying to avoid the potholes.

    September 19th, 2011 3:29 pm

  170. Barb

I’d love to borrow a pothole or two from some of the “worse” roads to place on Armstrong Woods Road, if that’s what it takes to slow drivers who think they’re on a freeway (posted 35 mph limit). Can’t get radar enforcement because the average speed is 45 mph and the powers that be say they would have to “raise” the limit (past a school and several businesses). Now that’s really a smart solution!

    September 19th, 2011 3:33 pm

  171. natasha

I vote for Bohemian Hiway, especially between Camp Meeker and Monte Rio! Chopped up pavement,narrow,no-shoulder road and very dark and slippery in the rain.

  172. Sherrie M

Frei Rd. is consistantly bad year after year!

    September 19th, 2011 3:37 pm

  173. Andrew

If you ever have driven on Kaiser Road, between Snyder Lane in Rohnert Park and Petaluma Hill Road, YOU WILL see that this is a dangerous and difficult road to drive on, even worse during the winter.

    September 19th, 2011 3:40 pm

  174. Sue

Visit Monte Rio for a glimpse of some poor roads, including Starrett Hill. There are other roads in Monte Rio that were paved just two years ago, but have already developed huge cracks. They’ve been patched, but the cracks have gotten larger, and the road is sliding. That’s dangerous.

    September 19th, 2011 3:43 pm

  175. Benoit

Lichau Road is the worst, every winter it is a driving hazard, some potholes could swallow the front wheel of a motorcycle, there is no drainage so temporary patches don’t hold

    September 19th, 2011 3:52 pm

  176. Millie W.

My vote goes to Lichau Rd. as the worst. I bought 4 new tires 6 months ago and had to replace the 2 front ones recently. Maybe we can start billing the County to replace our tires because of negligence in maintaining the road! It gets very dangerous because, to avoid the potholes, I have to drive on the part of the road of incoming traffic.

    September 19th, 2011 3:57 pm

  177. G. Williams

I second my wife’s comments. Winner of the worst road goes to Lichau Road.

    September 19th, 2011 4:01 pm

  178. Michelle

The alternate road of highway 12, Montgomery Drive. It is horrible! It is close to downtown and off of Farmers, you would think it would be better kept up.

    September 19th, 2011 4:08 pm

  179. Anthony Letizi

Lichau Road is so bad that I bought a Jeep to drive over this dangerous road because my other car would scrape and bottom out. There is a high differential between the low caved-in portions and the high ridges surrounding the depressed areas that I am sure is out of compliance with safety standards for road building.
The extensive patching by the County is commendable but the result is a jarring experience.

Lichau Road is the worst road in Sonoma County. The pot hoes are deep and plentiful. There ae numerous patches along the entire length of the road. The bumps and holes make for a very unsafe driving experience.

    September 19th, 2011 4:27 pm

  181. John

My vote is for Lichau Road because the patches upon patches have made it impossible to stay on your half of the road. All the drivers look like drunken sailors as they try to dodge the worst of the worst “repairs”. The shoulders are turning to gravel in places.

    September 19th, 2011 4:30 pm

  182. Liz

It is definitely Lichau Road. It gets worse and worse every year. I had a friend drive up it to visit me earlier this year when it was raining. She couldn’t see the potholes due to the rain, and her car scrapped metal when she hit a deep pothole. It completely destroyed the tire and she had to buy a new one.

    September 19th, 2011 4:32 pm

  183. Paul I.

I got rid of the 330 and got a Jeep. Live in West County. Roads are great now. SHould have gotten an off road vehicle thousands of dollars in tires and wheels ago. Had the Jeep Wrangler since 3/11 and no problems at all. Except my gas bill.

    September 19th, 2011 4:34 pm

  184. Janae Rosen

Lichau Road gets the nomination hands down, as the worst road in Sonoma County. It is full of potholes and uneven patching, causing drivers to swerve to miss other cars and cyclists on the road. What we need is to have the road properly paved once and for all. Why wait until an accident occurs resulting in a lawsuit? We live on a County maintained road, but we need to have it maintained by the County.

    September 19th, 2011 4:52 pm

  185. Mike

Irwin is still the worst. Many are a close second but Irwin has areas that will push you over into the other lane if you are not careful. It doesn’t matter which road you vote for the county will not fix it. Ask the head of the roads department and he’ll blame it on the bad economy and slumping tax revenue. I buy that now but Irwin like many roads hasn’t been repaved in 15 years. MAybe if you are lucky enough to have the Tour of California go down your street it will get repaved. Look at Bodega Hwy, Bennet Valley Road, Mark West Springs Road and Occidental. Hmmmmm…….

    September 19th, 2011 4:53 pm

  186. Paul Cowley

Got to be Lichau Road, Its positively dangerous as everyone swerves about the whole width of the road to miss the potholes. Its only time before a serious accident occurs.

Where to start? ALL of the westside Petaluma streets; the 101 from the Marin county line up to Cloverdale; Lichau, Spring Hill Road(im a cyclist)

  188. Don Baumhefner

The absolute worst road is Sonoma Mountain Rd, off of Adobe Rd. near Petaluma, not the other one in Santa Rosa. It is the best (hardest) cycling climb in the county, but the most dangerous descent due to the enormous potholes and gravel in various spots.

Keiser Road in Rohnert Park is terrible. Now it has some brand new 25 mph speed limit signs. Whose idea was that? At 25mph you feel every pothole and bump. This road should be taken at 35-40mph to make the ride merely bearable.

I’m voting for Lichau Road. It carries lots of commute time traffic and everyone is trying to avoid potholes while hurrying to get to work. I don’t know that it has ever been properly resurfaced–certainly not is the last 25 years.

    September 19th, 2011 6:05 pm

  194. Missy Spadora Conte

Francisco, off of Fulton Rd. This is perhaps the worst road I have ever traveled. The city/county allowed an elementary school to be built and then closed off the road so that there was no access by car…but they added some curb stones on the heaving pavement and for a walkway for the kids. This in effect, reduced the already terrible road to a one lane monstrosity. Bulldoze it now, there is no hope and it is an eyesore and dangerous to anyone in a vehicle lower than an suv.

    September 19th, 2011 6:06 pm

  195. Debbie Flora

Lichau Road is the worst road in the county, potholes, and more potholes, over 1 mile of road dodging to miss the bigs ones, and giving up trying to keep any kind of alingment to the car. Tires seem to wear out faster also.

    September 19th, 2011 6:06 pm

SPRING HILL RD. One of the most beautiful roads in the west county is so bad even autos avoid it. If you can handle the holes and bumps you are probably safe from an encounter with a vehicle.

  198. michelle Pereira

I agree, Lichau road is the worst! On a good day, it reminds me of driving the roads of Costa Rica, only difference is I’ve yet to see an oil drum in any of the holes yet. Probably just a matter of time…

Sonoma Mountain Road between Bennett Valley Road and Pressley. Not only are there an uncountable number of potholes but add steep grades and poor visibility you have a recipe for disaster.

Purrington Road between Mountain View and I Street just outside the city limit in Petaluma. I have lived on this street for 40 years and it has been paved continuously, one shovel full at a time. The very end of Mountain View, where it enters the county suffers from the same neglect.

In my experience, it’s Canfield Rd. between Blank and Bloomfield Rd. Patches on patches, most of which wash out in winter, making it more like an obstacle course than a road–and then there’s the perpetual spring that defies any attempt at patching, and the heavy trucks coming from the olive ranch… I don’t remember ever driving on Lichau, but I just might have to get over there to compare it to Canfield.

Melita Road between Montgomery and Queen Anne. It’s not a long stretch of road, but it is by far the worst, and LOTS of cyclists use it to avoid Hwy. 12 in NE Santa Rosa.

as anyone consided Laendale Road outside of Kenwood. Even the pot holes have pot holes. The sign says “Rough pavement”. WHAT pavement? 90% of the road has no shoulder. When the grape pick is on it becomes hard to squeeze a school bus past.

Sonoma Mtn. Road between Pressley and Warm Springs roads. Very bad pavement in many of the steeper, narrower, shadier, curvier sections. It’s an E-ticket bike ride, and not in a good way. There’s one section of new silky-smooth pavement, but only for a 100 yards – what about the rest of the road?

Frei Road is a real axle breaker! It gets patched up a bit but those patches pop out and leave a worse road underneath. I shudder at the toll it takes on my car going from Guerneville Rd. into Sebastopol as I do routinely.

Lichau Rd where it meets Roberts is now so bad that cars drive in whatever lane won’t destroy their suspension and axels; bicyclists complain of accidents and damage to their equipment. It’s been patched for so long there is no sense of what the original road was!

Barnes Road. There is a section near River Road that is probably 80-90% of are potholes that have been filled in. Every time I drive on Barnes I have to chuckle has how ridiculous it is knowing other roads not nearly as bad or even still in great shape are getting resurfaced.

Lichau Road!!! There are so many potholes that drivers swerve around them all the time. Considering the number of blind curves and narrow areas everywhere, obviously this makes the road exceptionally dangerous.

Lichau Road for the first mile off Roberts Road HAS to be the WORST road in Sonoma County. In the summertime it is a rugged patch work mess, but somewhat better than the maze of pot holes it becomes in winter. Road crews are responsive during the rainy season, but there is only so much they can do. Impossible!

Barnes Rd between Dennis and River Rd. New potholes are guaranteed after every rain shower, and the last set of holes (huge ones now) haven’t been paved in the past 6 months. Adding to the lack of maintenance, this road has deep ditches on both sides and the road narrows in some places to barely 2 cars wide. Also, bicyclists and walkers try to use the road causing drivers to slow to a stop, then swerve dangerously into oncoming traffic to pass. The worst part is the speeding drivers that pass cars at 60mph with NO THOUGHT to the risk to themselves and others.

this is all fine with coming up with the worst road in the county but unless it’s part of the 150 miles of road that the board of Sups. voted on maintaining what’s the point. The better plan would be come up with the worst road in the county then get the money to repair it…… Don’t just talk about it get off your butt & do something..

Lichau Road is one of the worst roads I have ever seen. Some people drive down the center of the road in an effort to avoid potholes. In the winter the patching does no good — the patch only lasts until the first good rain!

    September 20th, 2011 1:08 pm

  231. Terry V.

Lichau Road – shame on the county! We all pay taxes for road maintenance. Where did the money go?? We have to warn unsuspecting drivers and cyclists about the dangerous conditions of this road – absolutley an accident waiting to happen! The meager repairs have done nothing to improve it and have in some cases created even more danger. The residents have spent countless dollars on vehicle repairs and tires in an attempt to remain safe – we are constantly searching for a patch of decent road to drive on – it no longer exists. Getting home has become a real challange. (no)Thanks Sonoma County!!

Barnes Road, between Dennis and River. By the time you get to River, you’ll need that drink at John Ash. After heavy rains, get a ticket driving the ‘balance beam’ down the middle, or drive into the flooded ditches on either side! Wheee!

Few roads in Sonoma Co. are good. Most are bad. But the worst is Spring Hill Rd. between Western Ave and Petaluma-Valley Ford Rd.

Lichau Road in Penngrove is horrible…all POTHOLES and ineffective PATCHES. It has achieved third-world-country status.

Lichau makes most of the other nominees look like Oregon highways. The ruts, potholes, and lack of shoulders of Lichau would be dangerous on a straight flat road. However Lichau is a narrow , twisting, steep hillside road with very dangerous drop offs.

Old Redwood Hwy between Palace of Fruit and Penngrove probably has the highest traffic count of any deteriorating road in the county. It is hard to find a road that isn’t configured like a pinball machine that bounces your car from one bump or hole to another.

    September 20th, 2011 4:48 pm

Fallon Road, no contest. It starts out as the worst road, goes to “worster”, and finally ends at the “worstest” road on earth.

    Spring Hill Rd.
This could be a good alternate road out of Petaluma if not for all the potholes. Considering the amount of non-resident traffic that could benefit from use of this road, I hope that it gets selected for repair.

Lichau Road in Penngrove. The potholes and upside down potholes (those that have been filled in are pot-bumps?) together with the shoulderless winding “road” make this treacherous.

Milbrae Avenue – east of Stony Point. There are terrible pot holes that frequently get refilled, but they don’t seem to last for more than a few weeks. Also, the road floods during the rainy season.

As the Road Warrior knows, the Sonoma County Transportation and Public Works Department has used an experimental road repair technique on sections of Sonoma County roads, including Sonoma Mountain Road. The experimental technique includes grinding the existing asphalt road and approximately 10 inches of dirt below the road, and injecting it with a hardening enzyme to create a hard-surfaced dirt road. The experimental technique is an effort by the County to reduce costs associated with road repair and maintenance.
Not only did the County allow this road to deteriorate before trying this ‘experiment,’ but they intentionally did this to try to save money and see how this obviously failed technique could be applied to other parts of our beautiful county. Currently, a group of community members are organizing to ask the County to repair Sonoma Mountain Road and prevent this issue from happening to other Sonoma County roads. All you have to do is take a drive on Sonoma Mountain Road and we know you will agree that this is in fact the worst road in Sonoma County.

Langner Avenue which is in Southwest Santa Rosa – off Millbrea and Scenic. It gets flooded every year washing out the “fill in” they put in the holes every year. The condition just gets worse and worse every year.

Colgan Ave in SESR is a close second in my opinion.

Lichau Road has to be in the running for worst road. Surface is bumpy, uneven and riddled with potholes — many with hasty patches that seem to last only a few months. Sight distances in several places are dangerously limited. Drainage is poor in many places. Rocks drop onto the roadway from the “shoulder” and push drivers closer to the dropoff. Sonoma County cannot be proud of this old, neglected road.

Hurlbut and East Hurlbut in Sepastopol get my vote! Some roads named by others may be worse, but are more rural. Hurlbut and East Hurlbut are bordered by homes on both sides and the condition is deplorable!
