Here’s a question from a reader:

When driving from Santa Rosa to San Francisco yesterday afternoon (Oct 11: 1-3 p.m.) to see my daughter at SF State I noticed a law enforcement vehicle (CHP, Novato Police, Marin County Sheriff) parked by nearly every major exchange on Highway 101. I was feeling paranoid by the time I reached the Golden Gate, and since I didn’t see or read of any Amber Alerts I was wondering if you may have heard what was going on?
Thank you. DJ

The likely answer:

From Sonoma County CHP Officer Jon Sloat: “In each county, there is a protocol shared between every law enforcement agency regarding significant crimes. If a major crime occurs, and there is a vehicle description and time line, the word goes out to each agency. From there, each officer has a location on his/her beat where they are to set up and watch for the suspect vehicle until further notice. For instance, if a bank robbery occurred, there had a description of the car, and a direction of travel, officers from all local agencies would set up at major on ramps and intersection to see if they can intercept.”

In checking with San Rafael police, it turned out that was a purse snatching at about 1:45 p.m. downtown, and a countywide alert was issued for the suspect’s vehicle. As of this afternoon, the suspect has yet to be found.
