Caltrans this week begins work on the long-awaited remodel of Petaluma’s Highway 101 interchange at East Washington Street.

But the work will require some detours for drivers.

Weather permitting, crews are scheduled on the nights of Thursday; Friday; Monday; Tuesday, Dec. 20; and Wednesday, Dec. 21, to cut down trees to make room for the upgraded interchange.

As a result, at 10 p.m. Thursday and Friday the East Washington Street southbound onramp to Highway 101 will be closed until 5 a.m. the next day.

On Monday, the northbound 101 offramp to East Washington will be closed 10 p.m. until 5 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 20.

Then on Tuesday, Dec. 20, and Wednesday, Dec. 21, the westbound No. 2 (right) lane of East Washington will be closed from North McDowell Boulevard to the southbound 101 offramp from 10 p.m. until 5 a.m. the next day.

And the shoulder along northbound 101 north of the East Washington interchange will be closed for a short ways 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 21, to Friday, Dec. 23.

As part of the remodeling project, Caltrans plans a straighter southbound 101 onramp, a northbound offramp with two lanes instead of one and a new northbound onramp.
