Here’s a question from a Road Warrior reader:

Is Caltrans done with its 101 work now, as what appears to be completed lanes have not been repaved and have bumps galore and confusing dents in the road, etc.? Tamara

The answer comes from Caltrans spokesman Robert Haus. He said Caltrans isn’t done but basically is taking a break for the winter. He said Caltrans officials decided they wanted to open up the extra lanes from Rohnert Park Expressway south to Petaluma Boulevard North as quickly as possible to allow their use. Construction crews will return in the spring when it’s warm enough to repave the highway. He explained that one layer of paving will be rubberized asphalt, which is air temperature sensitive, needing it to be 55 degrees or warmer.

Caltrans did a similar thing a couple of years ago when it added lanes from Santa Rosa to Windsor. It opened up the extra lanes early and finished the paving work later. Parts of the Rohnert Park to Petaluma stretch are kind of rough, so drivers will have to pay extra attention.
