There’s hope: Gas prices are slowly inching down in Santa Rosa and across the state, AAA reports.

The average price for regular on Monday was $4.23 a gallon, down about a penny from the day before, down 5 cents from a week ago and down 10 cents from a month ago. But a year ago, gas was $4.154.

Still, prices range widely in Santa Rosa, with $3.98 apparently the lowest. That’s at the 76 station at Old Redwood Highway and Mark West Springs Road in Larkfield.

AAA reported Ukiah has the lowest average price among state metro areas at $4.07. Gasbuddy.com listed two stations there Tuesday at $3.97 — the QuikStop at Airport Park Boulevard and Talmage Road and the Arco at Hastings Road and Talmage Road.

The most expensive gas among the metro areas AAA surveyed was Eureka, where the average was $4.50. That’s still a bargain compared to the highest average in the nation — $4.86 at Wailuku, Hawaii, AAA says. The lowest reported was $3.45 in Casper, Wyo.

For California overall, the average price was $4.258 on Monday,.

Gas prices climbed steadily over the last few months amid rising Mideast tensions, refinery issues and other factors.

But now, AAA’s Matt Skryja, says, “Crude oil prices are declining as weak U.S. jobs data and reports that Iran might be open to compromise on its nuclear enrichment program both put downward pressure on oil prices.”
