Caltrans this week is holding a briefing for the media about the Highway 101 widening in Rohnert Park and Cotati and the East Washington Street interchange project in Petaluma. The Road Warrior will be there, so if you have questions about those projects, send them to me by leaving a comment below. I’ll try to get as many as possible answered.

When will the section of freeway in Cotati change from a 55 MPH zone to a regular 65 zone?

I’m wondering if they are going to raise the road bed at the county line to help prevent future flooding.

Please ask them what the hold up is on the Verizon wireless project to install fiber cable along Highway One to the Sea Ranch? Work has been suspended due to CalTrans permit issues.

Why are you stuffing everybody into two lanes at 3pm creating a traffic slowdown when in Marin it’s 4:30 and things run pretty good? Same on the end time too.

In order to make traffic flow at a better, and quicker less congested pace ʻall the time,ʻ please do away with these car pool lanes since very few people do ʻcar poolʻ anymore. The number 1 lane has now become the ʻNascarʻ lane with rarely a CHP car in sight most of the time.

Also, will the 101 widening be going down to Novato, or is Petaluma still the major obstacle?

Two questions: 1) Have they taken induced demand into consideration on these projects, and how much do they expect will be induced over the next few years? 2) How much extra capacity will be added to 101 at these locations?

When will the trees be trimmed so you can see if cars are coming on the westbound 12 to northbound 101 ramp?

Rohnert Park Expressway exit southbound has 1 tiny exit sign AFTER the exit. If you didn’t know where to exit, you’d pass it by. Put up a better, well placed sign.

The “end 55 mph limit” sign northbound after the Expressway is a half mile too far North. Regular freeway conditions exist way before that. Move the sign South.

Why is Cal Trans continuing to pay rent on the portable offices located at the corner of 12 and Fulton in Santa Rosa? For the amount of rent paid, could have been purchased several times over! Terrible waste of taxpayer money.
Why is the entry from 12 to Highway 101 going east so abrupt? Seems dangerous and road is very rough.

When are you going to put in the by-pass in Willits? We have waited so long for this since at least 1990 since it was brought up to fix our problems. It is unsafe for pedestrians to walk across the street, especially on Fridays. It takes 30 minutes to go one mile, please help.

Why is there always 4 guys standing around and only one guy working? Is there a perpetual lunch break that is part of cal trans policy? GET TO WORK!!!

Why on the Great Redwood Highway is Cal trans not replacing the destroyed Great Redwood Trees with many new ones. Are they going to change the name to Concrete Wall Freeway ??

When widening began between downtown Santa Rosa and Todd Road Caltrans told me that the sound wall would be completed in front of the Shady Lane Mobile Home Park by 2004.Now there are sound walls bordering empty lots but still none here. Why?

Why is it that they are widening 101 in Novato but are stopping at Atherton and not going down to the Sonoma County/Marin County line where traffic is always such a mess it seems like all the time these days

Are housing developers required to pay for freeway improvements since more houses mean more cars on the freeways? It seems that just getting one lane added each way is going to be quickly obsolete if home building isn’t somehow tied to freeway building.

When will there be a turn lane as promised, at Madrone on 116 outside of Cotati so no one else, especially school children have to die at this dangerous intersection?

This has nothing to do with 101 widening but it is a question I have for Caltrans. Can they please put in a reasonable speed limit for cars traveling on Highway 29 through Robert Louis Stevenson State Park on Mount Saint Helena? This place seems like an accident waiting to happen. Their are people trying to cross from one side of the park to the other that have to negotiate speeding commuters going over a blind hill trying to get home as fast as they can. I am not advocating a speed limit for the entire mountain, just the section at the top that passes through the park between the parking lots.

As a construction worker, I want to know why it takes twenty men to change a reflector, why they can never fix the roads but leave them in a constant statae of disrepair. Why do they not privatize the roadwork and save california a fortune?

I agree with Steve’s question, Why 3pm for the HOV lane? Marin tried the same time lines and eveything backed up to the Golden Gate Bridge, they went back to 4.30 and the traffic flowed, I’ve been commuting for the past 25 years, We don’t need a another survey to prove this just common sense……

What is the law that says CalTrans can only build HOV lanes? Are they effective in reducing congestion? How come kids (unlicensed and can’t drive a car) count?

Please inquire as to why when they first painted the south bound 101 airport blvd on ramp lane it continued and tied into the fulton rd offramp lane then later they changed it and seperated the two by forcing traffic from airport blvd into the slow lane. they could have kept the on ramp lane and off ramp lane seperate and avoided alot of congestion since the current configuration is so short

The same can be asked about the highway 12 south bound 101 on ramp they dive the traffice from that on ramp lane into the slow lane of 101 several 100 ft before the corby exit lane and instead they could have made it one continual lane all the way to the corby exit. there is a large percentage of those cars are seeking to exit at corby and the abrupt ending of the onramp lane confuses alot of drivers attempting to merge off.

mainly on both of these the biggest congestion times are when the HOV is in effect and therefore empty forcing the two right lanes to slow and absorb instead of merging over and making room

    thank you

Why does it take so long to finish the jobs on the freeway? Caltrans starts one job, leaves it for months, starts another elsewhere, leaves that, same story. OLD “road closed” signs stay up forever even though the road is open. You don’t know if the road is open or closed.

What is the process to get the carpool lane restrictions repealed? Is there a State or Federal office to appeal to?

Why doesn’t CalTrans activate the freeway on ramp merging signals. It’s obvious drivers know nothing about safe merging. Anytime of day you will find long lines of people coming on to the freeway almost bumper to bumper.
The signals are there and would definitely add to the safety on the freeway. Plus make for smoother driving.

What’s the upcoming sequence of events for the Hwy 101 Commerce Blvd overpass?

Will all of the existing lanes be moved to the new bridges? When is this expected to happen? When will both sets of bridges be used?

Thank you for giving your readers the opportunity to ask such valid questions re: CalTrans. Sure hope you can get some common sense answers.

Mine: How to remedy the very poor planning at the exits at Hwy 12 They make HUGE errors in judgment, endangering people…example: northbound drivers exiting Hwy 12, while trying to watch for fast moving cars coming off Hwy 12 overpass merging and then immediately watching for cars exiting 101 and having to merge (avoid?) cars trying to get into the proper lane to get to Third St. This is very dangerous. Also, who is responsibile for weeds/litter on Farmer’s Lane…CalTrans or SantaRosa City…the median strip looks terrible with dry weeds growing there. How long could it take to weedwhack them a few times per year or place RoundUp in the concrete before they grow so tall.?
