Caltrans illustration of the roundabout now under construction at Highway 20 and Nice-Lucerne Cutoff Road in Lake County.

Starting Monday, drivers using a key road in Lake County will have to take a bit of a detour.

Caltrans will close off Nice-Lucerne Cutoff Road at Highway 20 until early September to allow construction crews to finish building a roundabout at the intersection.

To get to the Nice-Lucerne Cutoff, drivers will have to take Stokes Road, which is just east of the intersection. They’ll also have to use the detour to get to Sentry Market  at the intersection.

Caltrans says it chose to build the roundabout partly for safety reasons because the Highway 20-Nice-Lucerne Cutoff intersection has an accident rate of more than five times the statewide average for similar intersections.

The project is estimated to cost a total of $4.6 million, with $2.6 million of that for the work by Granite Construction. It is to projected to be completed by the end of the year.
