If you’re driving in Petaluma, avoid going west on East Washington Street for the next four days. It’s a mess.

A project replacing a water main on East Washington has forced the daytime closure of both westbound lanes and prompted a detour for westbound traffic: North on Payran Street, then west on Madison Street and south on Wilson Street, which takes you back to East Washington. An alternate detour is to go south on Payran to D Street, then west to Wilson and north to East Washington.

“It’s not really pretty,” Petaluma Police Sgt. Ken Savano said of the closure and detour. “It’s causing driver distress.”

He said both eastbound lanes are open but are expected to be congested because of the construction work.

The East Washington closure is 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday, he said.

To deal with the traffic mess, Savano advised drivers to give themselves more time to get through the area or to avoid it entirely and take an alternate route.
