There’s a train coming, and Petaluma is trying to get the word out that the related construction next month will shut several streets at rail crossings.
“It’ll be a bit of a mess. People will find a way (around it), they will have to, ” said Petaluma Police Sgt. Ken Savano.
The tentative schedule, according to police, for the SMART train work calls for closure at the tracks of:
–Corona Road, Sept, 11 to 13.
–Payran Street, Sept. 18 to 20.
–East Washington Street, Sept. 25 to Sept. 27.
–D Street, Oct. 1 to 3.
–South Point Boulevard also will be closed but those dates were uncertain late last week.
The closures are part of the rail district upgrade of the tracks through Sonoma County. Crews are tearing out the old crossings and putting in new track and smooth crossings. To do so, they need to shut all lanes at each crossing day and night.
Savano said city officials are trying to spread word of the upcoming closures so that drivers can avoid them and take alternate routes.

“Smart road?” Petaluma has the ‘dumbest’ roads in the county! They build and build, and without considering the traffic implications/congestion.
Petaluma has a history of not building roads into the equations before construction of anything else. They’re still trying to figure out if they want the Rainier crossing to go over or under the 101. And in the meantime, the 101 widening will stop at Corona Rd until then. This has been going on for close to 5 years too!
So talk to the planning commissioners. They’re the ones responsible for this SNAFU! And others!
