Last year's worst road among readers was Lichau Road, just east of Rohnert Park. Road Warrior photo

It’s time for the Road Warrior’s third-annual contest for readers to vote for the worst road in Sonoma County.

Vote by leaving a comment below telling us what that worst road is, or a particular stretch of that road, and explain why it’s so bad. It’s fine to list more than one, but only the first one named will be counted. Please vote only once. No ballot stuffing.

All roads are eligible, except for Lichau Road and Irwin Lane, which were previous winners — or losers.

You have a week or so to vote, and then we’’ll report the winner and runners-up. And we’ll call the city/county road department in charge of the worst road to check to see what it plans to do about the road.

To read about last year’s worst roads, CLICK HERE.

Again, leave a comment below with your vote.

Spring Hill Rd. in Petaluma is THE WORST ROAD that a person has to drive on in this county. There are holes that are a foot deep. You need a four wheel drive vehicle to drive this road. My sister lives on this road right in the middle and it’s hard to visit her now as my low sedan barely makes it thru the holes. It’s a virtual war zone, dodge the landmines (holes).

How about hwy 101 from Windsor to Healdsburg – both directions. Not the absolute worst by any means… But likely the heaviest travelled in poor condition.

Well, for urban streets with one lane each direction, East Todd Road is rather disappointing to drive on…

But in relation to traffic volume carried and average speed of travel, Fulton Road is in rapidly declining condition, and falls apart enthusiastically following any rains. It is baffling the -poor- job that was done on West Third from Fulton almost to SPR, leaving all the bumps and undulations in the road surface…when Fulton could have used some love so much more.

Curious also why SR Avenue from Bellevue north to Yolonda is so perfect (best in SR?) but from Yolonda to Baker is so un-cared for…

Eastside Rd. between River Rd. and Healdsburg Ave. is horrendous. How bicyclists on it survive is a miracle. And one day earlier this summer, on the downhill north of Shoen Farm, I couldn’t believe what I saw—a guy on a penny farthing (look it up) wobbling at quite a rate of speed in the middle of the lane.

Fallon Road between Valley Ford Road and the Marin County line. It floods easily which contributes to the quick deterioration of any patchwork. Raise the roadbed 12-18 inches, repave and call it good once and for all.

How about Canfield Road between Bloomfield and Roblar? It’s just a patchwork of potholes, with an active spring that runs down the middle of the hill, blind hills, narrow passing and enough rough spots to make an alignment shop millionaires.

All the rural roads are awful. More important than picking one from the vast number is acknowledging the reason.

The Sonoma County Board of Supervisors’ top priority is excessive pay and benefits for itself and the “hard working” County employees, leaving only the crumbs for infrastructure.

How “hard working” are public employees? When I was one I would occasionally do a week’s worth of work in a day to ensure that I didn’t lose the ability to work at a normal pace.

I agree with the 101 from Hbg to Windsor… worst road per car thats for sure… I don’t why its been left so bad,, they ground/smoothed it from Hbg north to Mendo line, but left this gap from Hbg to Windsor..

It’s a short stretch of road, and only traveled by those who live in the area, so it’s probably not a winner, but Middle Rincon Blvd between Montecito Blvd and Badger Road makes your average street in a 3rd World Country look like the Autobahn. The good news is that it’s about to be repaved. Of course they didn’t want to do that when school was out. Since Rincon Valley Middle School is at the intersection of Middle Rincon and Badger, traffic is going to get even more ugly during construction.

Country rd: Cavedale Rd (although it looks like they are going to work on it soon)
Santa Rosa rd: Hoen Ave from Sonoma Ave to Farmers Lane which goes by the one of the Doyle park entrances has to be the bumpiest, most uneven and pot hole infested rd in town

#1 on my list is Cunningham Rd. in Sebastiool between Bloomfield and Shaeffer Roads. Even though it’s only 1/4 to 1/2 mile in length, its been patched and patched and patched and patched somany times that it really rattles your vehicle apart when you drive on it. It’s time to do more than just patch the holes!

#2 would be Cooper Rd., also in Sebastopol. Really bumpy and rough in spots.

Odd Fellows Park Road is one of many bad roads. So bad, in fact I had to take my truck in to a body shop to have them take the panels off both doors and tighten all the bolts. Due to the horrible roads in this county the windows were rattling loose in the door assemblies. Hmm, can I reimburse myself out of my property taxes?

    September 11th, 2012 9:37 am

  36. Dan

I never noticed how bad the roads were until I bought a 4Runner. If I buy a Caddilac, will they all go away?
Seriously though, I should think Montgomery Drive between Yulupa and Summerfield could use a little help. It’s bad enough it meanders like a snake on a hot skillet due to bike lanes, but the pavement is so uneven, it’s ridiculous. Let’s talk about that intersection at Montgomery and Summerfield too while were at it. What nimrod set that up?

+1 for Danny D’s comments. Hwy 101 between Healdsburg and Windsor has to be the most travelled of the “worst roads” in Sonoma County.

any road in Occidental, Joy and Bitner Rd especially. Road is sinking in several places and pot holes make it feel like your riding on an old wooden roller coaster. Not to mention the narrowness of the roads from the lack of tree trimming makes driving them dangerous and nerve racking every time.

    September 11th, 2012 9:48 am

The bottom half of Lynch Rd. The S turn with no shoulder, narrow and full of holes, and the rest above it to Macfarland.

    September 11th, 2012 9:53 am

  40. Bill Prange

I think the worst road per vehicle is Lynch Road off of Gravenstein Hwy South. It is tortuous, and traffic volume has greatly increased since the light at Hwy 116 was added last year. Second place goes to Canfield Road between Bloomfield and Roblar. Third place would be Barnett Valley Road from Olsen Road to Burnside, especially when it rains and fall apart like cookie dough.

Stony Point Road between Sebastopol Road and Hearn Avenue. It’s getting expensive for me, as I keep having to get my tires balanced and alignment fixed (and I’m driving UNDER the speed limit!). It’s a huge distraction to be paying such close attention to potholes and the bad road, when 100% of my attention should be driving as a whole. They REALLY need to fix that section!!

Has to be Spring Hill Road. I drive it twice a day to and from work, and it’s like driving in a video game trying to avoid all the pot holes!! It’s worse in the winter!

  44. D

Montgomery Dr. from Farmers Lane to Summerfield. This is the worst road in the city by far!! More holes that a brick of Swiss cheese. I can’t believe that we pay more and more in taxes and fees of one sort or another and seems like things only get worse. Why is it that City and County officials keep putting big bucks in their pockets, eating up our tax dollars and we the people keep getting shit on?

Stony Point road from Northpoint Parkway across Highway 12, both directions. It goes from rim-bending potholes north of Northpoint to a red-light-running nightmare around Sebastopol Road and the gas station, and includes the utterly baffling lane pinch for southbound drivers coming out of the Sebastopol intersection – people take the right lane thinking they can turn into the drugstore, and then are forced to merge left a mere ten feet before the driveway. What thinking (or lack thereof) led to that mess?

    September 11th, 2012 10:27 am

Chalk hill road east of Windsor. Motorcycle riders beware, you could die on this road!

    September 11th, 2012 10:28 am

  49. Paul

It has to be Sutter in Petaluma. It connects Ely and E Washinton through a nice residential neighborhood and must have 1000 (I have never actually counted) pot holes in various stages of disrepair. This is dangerous, distracting, embarrassing and property value destroying for this residential area.

    September 11th, 2012 10:37 am

  50. Shirley Shearhart

I have to agree with Aly. Irwin Lane between Hwy 12 and Occidental Rd. A pretty well used road as it is the closest connection to Occidental to bypas the city of Sebastopol and all it’s congestion. It has patched patches bounce you along.

  52. Gregory Smith

I’d have to vote for Spring Hill Rd. as the worst road in Sonoma County, even though I live on one of the roads mentioned in the comments. If I win the 120 million dollar lottery, my road is getting completely re-done from end to end, including striping and gutters.

    September 11th, 2012 10:43 am

  53. Bryan

Can’t agree more with Ray Waldbaum. Our $400k “administrator” consistently fails at true management. Too many ‘chiefs’ in this teepee. We need a Board that demands change, not sits nice with all the over paid management and union reps and acts like they all just want to be friends. If times are tight – tightening up must start at the top. Now, we are losing a huge investment in roads due to mismanaged priorities.
My vote? Hessel Road south after any rainstorm – about 4-5 large potholes in the same spots. Instead of worst road, let’s start naming these potholes since they look like they’re going to be with us a long time!

So many worthy candidates for “worst road”… I just want to say that it’s disheartening to travel the smooth, well-maintained back roads in Marin and as soon as you cross the county line back into Sonoma, it’s jackhammer time on your rear end.

    September 11th, 2012 10:52 am

  58. Liz

Fitch Mountain Road in Healdsburg is pretty terrible. I realize this isn’t a very public road, but a lot of people live and drive on it and it’s comprised of one temporary fix after another by dumping little piles of asphalt every once in a while into the pot holes.

    September 11th, 2012 10:54 am

  59. ms. sanchez

Corby Ave. to Earle St. definitely, every year has the biggest potholes, every year!! The whole road needs to be redone!! New tires twice a year is too much!! And when you hit the potholes during the rainy season if your not paying attention or it is at night and cannot see the potholes, it is very startling!! Not to mention the damage to your car! Worst!

I ‘nominate’ Cazadero Hiway! Bumpy yes,but the worst part is the lack of an obvious yellow center line! Very dangerous in any weather-really scary in fog or rain. I was told by Supervisor Carrillo that the county would add reflectors or restripe so far it hasn’t been done!
Another lousy road is Bohemian Hiway, especially between Camp Meeker and Monte Rio. Very curvy, with absolutely no shoulder and the sides of the road sometimes fill with water-EEK! We are currently rebuilding the front end on one car and praying over another!

I can’t disagree with any of the comments here, but as a driver who commutes to Petaluma from Cotati each day, I have to give my vote to Old Redwood Hwy. There are worse roads out there, but given the traffic volume on this stretch, it’s quite bad, and getting worse every year. I, and many others, have resorted to driving with my passenger side tires near or in the shoulder where possible because it’s smoother than the driving lane itself.

As a bicyclist, I’d love to see better pavement on the rural roads – Canfield, Bloomfield, Llano, Peterson, Eastside, and Chalk Hill all come to mind.

Stadler Lane. It has multiple potholes large and small, clogged culverts so that it floods in multiple places every year, is one-lane and hasn’t been paved in 50+. Every year the county comes out and fills the pot-holes with asphalt which just washes away at the next rainstorm. The road has been patched so many times with small areas is asphalt that the road now cuts through property lines, instead of falling on where it originated. Passing is near impossible except at two locations because of how narrow it is, and it’s so “out-of-the-way” that people use it as a dumping ground for old couches, mattresses, etc. There are dangerously tall eucalyptus trees which cut the power yearly (and occasionally block the road from traffic unless a resident can get a chainsaw, since the city doesn’t care for it at all). I grew up on that road, and I dearly want to see it fixed. It was bad nearly 30 years ago when I was born, and it’s bad now.

Vine Hill Rd. on a bike leaves bruises on my hands, no matter what cycling gloves I wear. Scariest road: Chalk Hill, the death luge from Spurgeon to the top of the hill. Narrow lanes, no shoulders, cavernous rocky ditches, potholes, blind curves and the occasional pickup doing 50 mph.

sad thing is the ammount of tax dollars that are spent in this county and the roads suck so bad.

spring hill in petaluma is barely a road…don’t complain about the gravel, that is the road.

pleasant hill in sebastapol all the way to where it turns into bloomfield. there are potholes that are more than 4″ deep.

canfield is a pothole rutted mess.

  96. Jeff

Snyder Lane in Rohnert Park, between Lawrence Jones Middle School and Golf Course Drive, especially the north bound lane. Lots of potholes and unevenness, and is banked at an angle that feels like a Nascar track. And to top it off kids are walking to and from home and school so it can be a dangerous road to drive.

    September 11th, 2012 2:58 pm

  97. Joe

I just this is just to make people feel good about complaining. The Sups will say the same thing over and over agian. We will only take care of 150 miles of roads. Seems to me once they repave a road do they say they are taking care of the road afterwards?

Ely Rd North!!!! Starting from the Palace of Fruit all the way to Corona! Crossing the railroad tracks alone is enough to tear out your suspension. The wood in the crossing tracks is worn down and not level with the road.

  102. Jack

The half-mile of Blucher Valley Road from east end at Bloomfield Road straight up dangerous hill at 2800 address. Pot holes on road that needs to be widened a couple of feet, especially up the first hill, that needs its yellow line repainted to prevent head-on collisions between cars, bicycles, and hikers. Someone is going to be killed here.

Faught Road near Shiloh Park! Horrible!

  104. Christopher Fisher

Maybe I missed it browsing through this lengthy list, but I find it hard to believe no one’s mentioned the I Street Extension in Petaluma, from I Street past Tara Firma Farm to San Antonio Rd. Not only do you have to deal with the the huge potholes and windy roads, around which so many people love to drive twice the speed limit, due to the lack of police patrols, but other folks also love to dump their old sofas, beds, and refrigerators along the side of the road too. Cracked a leaf spring in the SUV on this road.

Calistoga road from Badger road to the county line. Middle Rincon road from Montecito blvd to Badger road an this is in front of the junior high….very dangerous.

    September 11th, 2012 4:59 pm

  106. Bob D.

Wow. So many to choose from. My nomination is St. Helena Road between Calistoga Road and Napa County. The road is winding with blind curves and is so neglected that the striping is gone and vegetation is encroaching on the sides. Parts of the road aren’t even 2 full lanes wide and as a result the blind turns are simply not safe.

Over 100 comments, not too many road repeats. That tells us how bad So.Co. roads really are.

Wow~we have some work to do around this county…don’t we all pay taxes for this to be fixed? Take a drive around Rio Nido patches and holes everywhere(we bought 4 wheel drives too). When it’s raining the roads become small rivers-no culverts or drains. Shameful.

101 in RP is in a sad state, the temp transitions CalTrans has left in place for weeks are far to rough for freeway speeds

    #1 Canfield Rd
    #2 Blank Rd

Both roads are too narrow for 2 vehicles to pass. Bicyclists take their life in their hands when riding on these two roads. In some places the roads are already braking up in to gravel and some of the potholes have been around for a year or two! For some reason the County Road People dug out the ditches right up to and sometimes beyond the asphalt. When I was a kid there were dirt paths on both side of the road, wide enough to bike on, ride on or just walk on without fearing for one’s life.

  112. liz

Amazing how many responses…..don’t understand why Mendo Co. has had the priveledge of paving over roads that are not nearly as bad as some mentioned here. But, I agree with the 101 Southbound….Healdsburg to Windsor!! The cracks and broken cement swallow my car everytime I travel it.For those unfamiliar…..stay in the fast lane, it’s somewhat better.

  114. Tom

Depending on where in the county you live and what roads you drive, you will have your own opinion of the worst. However, you really can’t have a worthy opinion unless you were to drive every road, and then comment. A previous comment by Ray Waldbaum is particularly relevant: $90,000/year for county employees who deliver 1 days worth of work but take 5 days to do it is really the problem. This is what we have to fix! Big government has to go.

  116. Left Bank

Long story short: Sonoma County rural roads (especially in the west county) are in dire need of major repair. The worst road is the one each commentator has to use regularly. Some stimulus money headed this way would improve our failing infrastructure and create jobs.

    September 11th, 2012 7:23 pm

  117. olivia

Of the roads I drive regularly, Frei Rd. is the worst. Lynch Rd. is pretty bad, too. But I don’t feel it is a fair assessment, as I know roads in Petaluma, Sonoma, Santa Rosa, et. al., are equally bad–I just don’t have to deal with them on a regular basis. I can’t believe that in 2012, with national and international spotlights on Sonoma County, we can’t fix our roads. It’s nuts!

    September 11th, 2012 7:35 pm

  118. Rex Faktor

A comment made many times is that the county road crews attempt repairs, but their repairs are woefully inadequate and are not effective. So what little money we do have to spend on these roads is basically wasted on negligent work. Does the county do the same thing over and over again, expecting different results?
What input would a county roads rep. have on this common feeling by residents that their work is not up to par?

    September 11th, 2012 7:43 pm

  119. Left Bank

@Tom: you seriously believe county ROAD workers are paid $90,000 a year and manage to finagle 1 days work out of five?
I might remind you, it was Republican President Eisenhauer who raised U.S. taxes to an all time high thus creating the revenue to build the interstate highway system, many of us seem to take for granted, among other things. Sorry, but without revenue (taxes, if you like) we have nothing to make anything.

Millbrae won’t win any prizes. Not so much the potholes, which, to be fair, have been filled in (not that they won’t open up again after the first rain), but those ditches! Awful and dangerous.

Bay View Hill Road (or is it Bay Hill View?) out of Bodega. Been bad for years and it never gets better, only worse. There are so many potholes that when you descent, it shakes your fillings loose. While Spring Hill out of Petaluma is bad, F plus, Bay whatever is an F minus. Come on county…we can do better.

    September 11th, 2012 8:35 pm

  125. Howard

How do you translate Pothole into Swiss German?? Sorry it doesn’t exists. Try explaining to a Swiss what a Pothole is. They’ll look at you funny, like why would there be a hole in the road.

Either one. I Street, Sound like Eye, from Grevilla to San Antonio road. Not sure if the short cut out of town is worth driving on this road. #2 Los Alamos road, the first mile or two are horendous. You don’t realize how bad till you turn around and come down them on a bike.

Years ago when I lived in Guatemala, the local government there had a great way of dealing with potholes, etc.as a part of paying taxes, All men were required to show up in the morning and were supplies with shovels and other tools. A truck full of paving material followed the laborers and placed the material where needed. This really worked on our steep and very mountainous winding roads. And yes, there was a lot of vehicular traffic-mostly shared privately operated small bus transport. We could add women, too!

This group is pushing the county to come up with a plan. The last 20 years the supervisors have reduced road funding – one of our basic services. Meanwhile salaries and benefits are out of control.

We need to return to the basics in this county and fund roads before pet projects.

My vote would have to be Milbrae between Stony Point and Redwood. There are so many open, filled, and filled and re-opened potholes that I feel the need to drive 15mph. Not only that, but it’s narrowness is enhanced by the fact that the sides are crumbling into ditches. I was almost hit by a truck that felt the need to drive down the middle for fear of falling into a side ditch. Definitely bad.

DENNIS LANE AND BARNES ROAD in Santa Rosa are TERRIBLE. The area is so overdeveloped for a tiny little country road. So many people drive both roads, and now BARNES Rd. had become so dangerous because it is so narrow in certain parts where the cement is literally crumbling off the sides making it so narrow that two SUVS can barely go by each other in some parts. Extremely dangerous and should anyone ever get in a head on accident on that road, I would say it was preventable had this road been properly maintained. I guess this is our property tax money hard at work.

By far the worst road is Cunningham off Bloomfield in Sebastopol especially where it intersects with Schaeffer Rd.
The trucks from the dairy come twice a day and really eat up the road. The only good spot on Cunningham is where I think someone personally put in a substantial patch at their own expense in front of their driveway. Maybe the county could hire him to do the rest since his seems to have lasted longer than the patches they have done.

Right smack in Downtown Healdsburg. Our streets are a mess with the Sewer replacement project and the contractor leaves patch jobs that’ll knock the fillings out of your teeth.

Spring Hill Rd. in Petaluma is by far the worst road in the STATE. Please fix it. In fact, I don’t think there is any pavement left, just potholes and gravel.

trowbridge Street in santa Rosa has the worse road for cars and bike my kids felt 5 times while riding bikes. It doesn’t even have a side walk is a killer monster road i am ashame of the city to have such poor roads

Spring Hill Rd. can’t even be called a road. It’s a gravel nightmare.

I agree Trowbridge have no side walks or lines where the road ends and is really unsafe for me to walk or ride my bike. Is unfortunate that the city allows the roads to be a dissaster because they are located in a low income population. Shame on you city council..

Old Redwood Hwy both directions from Ely to Main between Petaluma and Penngrove. Highly traveled, and patches just are not keeping up with the overall decay of the road surface.

Green Hill Road btwn Graton Road & Occidental Road.
Joy Road btwn Coleman Valley & Fitzpatrick Road.
Bittner Road has the highest potential to collapse this winter.
Frei Road to instantly undo your alignment.
Ross Road in front of the Graton post office.

Lowell Avenue!!! Off of Stony point road by the Pasta King!
People CONSTANTLY use this road as a quick detour from traffic destroying this road!

The section on Canfield Road between Bloomfield and Bland is horrendous. Canfield gets my vote. It is dangerous for both bikes and cars.

Another vote for Cunningham Road. It’s all pothole patches. There doesn’t seem to be any original road surface left.

Frei Road – It’s a heavliy used short cut between Hwy 116 and Guernville Road. Hundreds and hundreds of vehicles use that road daily… I know, I’m one of them!

SPRING HILL RD does not deserve the word “road”. Like the fields in this area that are plagued by gophers, it is riddled with holes. A real liver jiggler!

Another vote for Chalk Hill Rd. Every rain exposes huge potholes, and even now, in the summer, it’s in bad shape. with bad asphalt, bad grading, swales and bumps. And a previous writer is correct… if you ride a motorcycle be careful on Chalk Hill Rd, it’ll make a serious attempt to kill you!

  212. Patty

Spring Hill Road for all the reasons John gave in his vote for Chalk Hill. There are more potholes than actual road. Temporary filling is just that- temporary until the first rain washes it all away. A drive on this road in good weather is a nightmare. A drive on this road in bad weather is risking your life!

A small portion of a larger road… but absolutely miserable!

My wife and I vote for Hoen Ave in Santa Rosa between Doyle Park and Farmer’s Lane. I wander about our county quite often and could comment on many roads that are obviously awful but this little portion of Hoen takes the cake. Seriously, this well less than one mile section is so bad I wouldn’t care to *walk* down it. Avoid at all costs!

Spring Hill Road. Can we call it a road? I don’t think so. It’s atrocious!!!

I vote for Spring Hill Road also. My Aunt lives there and I can’t visit her because my car won’t make it on her road, my car bottoms out. We have to meet in town.

I want to know who is going to pay for my tires! We go through them like toilet paper due to the conditions on Spring Hill Rd. The road is beyond pothole fillbecause there is no longer a road. It’s one pot hole after another,

Hwy 116, heading west from Stony Point. The grading in the shoulder makes for dangerous bicycling. Most drivers seem to realize it and are conscientious when passing.

Sonoma Mountain road has got to be one of the worst road in Sonoma county. there has to be as many pot holes as there are cars and trucks that pass on that road.

Willowside Road – end to end; Sanford Road from Willowside to Occidental; and probably the worst is Irwin Lane from Occidental to Hwy 12 outside of Sebastopol. Lot’s of bicycle traffic adds to the hazard – lot’s of uneven pavement, narrow, no bike lanes, and open ditches.

LIBERTY ROAD, between Sillman Lane and Pepper Road, looks as old as the hills, and the design of the roadway is very outdated (pre 1900 era)

Ramal Road, west from the Napa County line (Napa side is beautiful). It won’t get many votes because not many people go there, but it is bad.

Two short roads coming off the west end of Ramal, Dale and Acacia are even worse.

    November 11th, 2012 5:12 pm

  223. Tam McPartland

For bicyclists, Willowside between Santa Rosa Creek Trail and Hall Rd. is the worst. It’s rough and narrow and in terrible shape with potholes and patches over patches. No bike lane and a ditch instead of a shoulder.

By far Sonoma Mountain Road is the worse road in Sonoma county. The number of cyclist tragedies on itself plus the fact that the road is literally disintegrating should be enough to win this voting.
