Starting Friday, traffic on Petaluma’s East Washington Street will be more of a challenge than usual for a few days.

A construction crew will be closing part of the city’s main east-west road as it continues work on replacing an 18-inch water main under the road and pipes connecting to businesses along the street.

Larry Zimmer, the city’s capital improvement division manager, said that at times the eastbound lanes will be closed as the crew works on a particular stretch with eastbound traffic detoured to side streets and with westbound lanes open. But at other times it’ll switch, with westbound lanes closed and detoured and eastbound lanes open.

The work will be 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and then Monday through Friday. All lanes will be open on the weekend.
