SMART rail work has closed Third Street in Santa Rosa at the tracks until Thursday evening. Road Warrior photo

Note to readers: This column has been updated.

SMART rail line construction work has arrived in Santa Rosa, and that means for the next few weeks certain roads will be completely closed for a few days at a time where the streets cross the railroad tracks. Drivers will need to find alternate routes.

Third Street is closed now through 6 p.m. Thursday.

After that will be, likely starting the first week in November:

–Sixth Street.

–Guerneville Road.

–Ninth Street.

–College Avenue.

–Seventh Street.

–Eighth Street.

SMART on Thursday morning had listed specific but tentative closure dates for each of the crossings, but in the afternoon it announced that the work had been postponed because a train next week will be delivering rail in Santa Rosa and the construction crews are needed to prepare for that.

The closures are part of the rail district’s upgrade of the tracks through Sonoma County. Crews are tearing out old crossings and putting in new track and smooth crossings. To do so, they need to shut all lanes at each crossing to allow the work to be done day and night.
