Caltrans on Wednesday night will close Highway 162, which runs from Highway 101 north of Willits to Covelo, for 24 hours to permit additional repairs to a section of the road that washed out in last month’s storms.

The highway will be closed 7 p.m. Wednesday to 7 p.m. Thursday about 1.7 miles east of 101. Crews will be installing an additional piece of culvert to lengthen the one put in during emergency repairs, Caltrans spokesman Phil Frisbie Jr. said.

After the highway reopens, the road still will be down to one-lane traffic. But Frisbie said Caltrans will begin working to repair the second lane and hopes to have that done in a few weeks, weather permitting.

The repairs will be temporary until probably summer when a permanent fix will be done, he said.

There are county roads that could be used instead during the closure, but some are gravel, windy and may not be suitable for your trip or vehicle.
