Santa Rosa police plan a DUI/driver’s license checkpoint Saturday night.

The checkpoint will run from 8 p.m. Saturday until 3 a.m. Sunday — the bars close at 2. The location wasn’t revealed.

It is one of eight checkpoints Santa Rosa police are holding under a grant issued last fall from the state Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

While checkpoints themselves don’t yield that many DUI arrests, usually two or three, local police agencies say the publicity of the checkpoints reduces DUI crashes. Basically, people who might drink and drive don’t because they’re afraid of being arrested at a checkpoint.
