Sebastopol Road at Stony Point Road: Santa Rosa's top intersection in reported collisions. Road Warrior photo

Planning to drive through the intersection of Stony Point and Sebastopol roads in Santa Rosa? Better be careful. It again ranks No. 1 in the city for highest number of reported collisions.

The Roseland-area intersection racked up 16 collisions last year, twice that of 2011 when it tied for sixth place but down from 20 in 2010 and 19 in 2009 when it ranked No. 1 for both years.

2011’s No. 1 — Highway 12 at Mission Boulevard — fell last year to a tie for second place with Santa Rosa Avenue at Hearn Avenue, each with 11 collisions.

Each year recently, the Police Department’s traffic unit puts out a list of 25 intersections with the most reported collisions. Then each week during the year, officers in the traffic unit typically spend part of their day at one of the intersections, looking for traffic violators, with the idea of trying to make them safer.

The list of 25 is based on the number of collisions in which police took a report. If a crash was minor and the drivers didn’t seek a police report, it was not counted. And the list doesn’t factor in the number of cars going through each intersection, so the intersection where you scientifically stand the greatest chance of getting hit may be some other one. Regardless of that, these 25 intersections are dangerous and you should be careful at them.

Officer Jeff Adams, who oversees the traffic unit’s extra enforcement operation at these intersections, said he hadn’t reach any conclusion on why Stony Point at Sebastopol had so many collisions.

Here’s the list of 25:
