SOSroads, a group lobbying for better road maintenance in Sonoma County, is looking for your comments on how the county should finance improvements.

The group, which is about a year and a half old, is conducting an online survey with some general questions but particularly includes questions on possible ways to pay for better roads, including:

–Raising  taxes.

–Devoting more of the county budget to roads.

–Cutting county workers’ salaries and benefits by 5 percent and use that money for roads.

–Reduce the number of county workers by 5 percent and use that money for roads.

–Extend Measure M’s quarter-cent sales tax, now set to expire in 2016, and devote 80 percent of the revenue to road maintenance. Twenty percent now goes to maintenance.

–Impose a $20-a-vehicle tax.

–Increase the hotel tax that affects mostly tourists.

–Create road maintenance districts funded by parcel taxes of $300 to $500 a year.

Michael Troy, one of the founders of SOSroads, says the group plans to present the survey’s results to the county Board of Supervisors and roads department with the idea of trying to stir some action.

He says the group is mailing 6,000 postcards promoting the survey to residents along some of the county’s worst roads, hoping to get their input.

He says most of the money ideas have been discussed by the Board of Supervisors, while others, such as the county staff and pay cuts, came from SOSroads.

In announcing the survey, the group notes that of the 1,382 miles of county-maintained roads, money is being spent to keep in good condition only 200 miles.

“The remaining 1,182 miles receive only pothole filling, and many have already begun to fall apart and will eventually deteriorate to gravel or dirt,” the group warns.

    it is my personal opinion that we spend to much money on open space, programs for persons who could work but don’t, and their are to many vehicles on the road without proper registration . Out of state , stolen tags, no tags, and much more .

    if wee were to go after the unregistered and phony registration there would be more money .

    Just where has the money been going from prior budgets over all these years?

    Oh, I forgot – the bloated self-serving concessions to tax termites has priority.

    What happened to the .25 the gullible voters approved (for the SOLE purpose of repairing our roads) a couple years ago ?

    We have a tax structure similar to many counties which have no problem maintaining their roads. The problem isn’t generating additonal revenue, it’s responsible fiscal management by our county government.

    Looks like the situation will keep getting worse.

    What if the 36 cents per gallon plus the 2.25% state sales tax per gallon of gas actually went to fixing our roads, we would have some very nice roads instead of diverting the funds into the general fund. With gas prices climbing again, we should be seeing a windfall from the other additional 2.25% tax according to gasbuddy com. Yes also we are already being charged .5% additional sales tax with measure J here in Sonoma was sold to us because it was suppose to fix our potholes just a year ago.

    Since we are already “sharing” the roads with bicyclists. Why don’t we share the “cost” to keep up the maintance of the roads! What would be wrong with a license and registration for cyclists on county and city maintained roads? Then I wouldnt feel so bad “sharing”!

    We’ve been down this road before (no pun intended).
    We have authorized increased taxes for just such purposes only to have Sacramento take those funds to support the general fund. NOW in all their self-serving glory, they are pronouncing a budget surplus a result of another tax increase, but we are still left with roads in disrepair – that should have been fixed – and one of the solutions is yet another tax because Sacramento stole the first one.
    When will we declare that enough is enough?
