Santa Rosa police on Saturday plan to hold a DUI/driver’s license checkpoint.

The location wasn’t disclosed, but the checkpoint will be 8 p.m. Saturday to 3 a.m. Sunday.

It is one of eight checkpoints Santa Rosa police are holding under a grant issued last fall from the state Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

While checkpoints themselves don’t yield that many DUI arrests, usually two or three, local police agencies say the publicity of the checkpoints reduces DUI crashes. Basically, people who might drink and drive don’t because they’re afraid of being arrested at a checkpoint.

DUI has become a disproportionate effort by public safety at the expense of violent crime, child abuse, rape and other more important crimes. The local economy has become based on production of alcohol yet those profiteers do not fund programs to deal with alcohol abuse. Yet, we taxpayers bear the brunt of the alcohol game.

I’m glad the location wasn’t disclosed, like his often is. Please stop announcing the locations. Announcing they’re taking place is probably a deterrent, but announcing the location ruins it.

Thank you to those involved in writing these grants! And for continuing to find various ways to directly address the drunk driving problem in SoCo.
