Here’s the latest information about road construction projects and lane closures throughout Sonoma County during the week of April 8-12, with Highway 101 closures in Petaluma, Santa Rosa’s “extra attention” intersection and a roundup of CalTrans projects throughout the North Coast.

Petaluma

The biggest news this week is the start of a new phase of Highway 101 construction on the Sonoma-Marin Narrows project, which brings evening lane closures between Washington Street and Petaluma Boulevard South as the highway is widened from four to six lanes. This phase of the decade-long 101 widening project will take three years, will cost $120 million and at times will involve narrowing traffic to one lane in each direction.

This phase involves reconstructing the Petaluma Boulevard South interchange; replacing the Petaluma River Bridge; constructing or widening nearly three miles of frontage roads; providing new pedestrian and bicycle enhancements; replacing the northbound State Route 116 Bridge and widening the southbound SR-116 Bridge to accommodate future carpool lanes on U.S. 101.

Starting Monday, April 8, Caltrans has scheduled nightly lane closures on northbound and southbound U.S. 101 from just north of the Sonoma County line to the Kenilworth pedestrian overcrossing south of Washington Street. In addition, there will be lane closures on eastbound and westbound State Route 116 at the U.S. 101 Interchange. At least one lane will remain open in each direction on northbound and southbound U.S. 101, and on eastbound and westbound SR 116.

U.S. 101 widening:

Northbound U.S. 101: Monday night through Thursday night, from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m., Friday night from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m., and Saturday night from 11 p.m. to 8 a.m.

Southbound U.S. 101: Monday night through Thursday night, from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m., Friday night from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m., and Saturday night from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m.

State Route 116 interchange at the U.S. 101:

Eastbound SR 116: Monday night through Thursday night, from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m., and Friday and Saturday nights, from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.

Westbound SR 116: Monday night through Thursday night, from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m., Friday and Saturday nights from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m.

This work is weather dependent. If it is delayed due to weather conditions, it will be rescheduled for a later time.

Santa Rosa

Santa Rosa police will be monitoring one of the city’s most collision-prone intersections, Yulupa Avenue at Hoen Avenue, which  last year was tied for fourth place with 9 collisions.

As part of a weekly Monday through Friday special enforcement program, Officer Jeff Adams says officers particularly will be looking for drivers not wearing seat belts, who are illegally using cellphones, are speeding, running red lights or committing lane violations.

Each week, the officers pick one of the city’s top 25 collision-troubled intersections to monitor.

Sonoma County

Rob Silva, the county’s Road Department operations manager, supplies these updates:

Guerneville – The Old Monte Rio Road remains closed while work continues on the Bridge Timber replacement project.

Santa Rosa – Stony Point Road remains under one lane traffic controls as the culvert replacement project continues. It is slowed by the presences of two high pressure gas mains in the excavation area. Two inspectors from PG&E are on scene for the duration of the project.

CDF crews will be assisting with roadside brushing on Tuesday and Wednesday along Martinelli Road west of Forestville and Petersen Road between Blank and Roblar roads in south Sonoma County.

The Healdsburg crew is scheduled to crack seal on Olivet Road as part of the Summer Chip Seal preparations.

The Sonoma crew will continue asphalt grinding and patching on London Ranch and Adobe Canyon roads.

Humboldt County

Route 96 – PG&E of Eureka has been issued a Caltrans Encroachment permit for utility work from the junction with Route 299 to the junction with Route 169 on Wednesday, April 10. Work hours are 8AM to 3PM. Traffic will be intermittently restricted to one lane. Motorists should anticipate 5-minute delays.

Route 96 – A project to build a retaining wall 0.5 mile south of Bluff Creek Road will continue. One-way traffic control with temporary stop signs will be in effect 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. Motorists should anticipate 10-minute delays. Contractor – Engineered Soil Repairs, Inc. of Walnut Creek.

Route 101 – PG&E of Eureka has been issued a Caltrans Encroachment permit for utility work southbound from B Street to Sixth Street in Eureka continuing Thursday, April 4. Nighttime work hours are 10PM to 5AM. Southbound traffic will be restricted to one lane. Motorists may experience minor traffic slowdowns.

Route 101 – North Coast Rape Crisis Team of Eureka has been granted a Caltrans Encroachment permit for the Walk A Mile In Her Shoes event from F Street to M Street in Eureka on Saturday, April 6. Event hours are 5:30PM to 7:30PM. Motorists are advised to watch for pedestrians on sidewalks and crossing streets, and may experience minor traffic slowdowns.

Route 254 – PG&E of Eureka has been issued a Caltrans Encroachment permit for utility work near Holmes Flat Road on Wednesday, March 10. Work hours are 9:30AM to 11:30AM. One-way traffic control will be in effect. Motorists should anticipate 5-minute delays.

Route 255 – AT&T of Eureka has been issued a Caltrans Encroachment permit for utility from the intersection with Route 101 in Eureka to V Street in Arcata. Work hours are 8AM to 5PM, weekdays. One-way traffic control will be in effect. Motorists should anticipate 5-minute delays.

Route 299 – Slide repairs from 1.0 to 1.5 miles east of SMT Road will continue. Intermittent one-way traffic control will be in effect 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. Motorists should anticipate 5-minute delays. Contractor – G R Sundberg, Inc. of Arcata.

Route 299 – Paving repairs near Chezem Road will continue. Work hours are 7:30AM to 7PM, weekdays. Traffic will be restricted to one lane in each direction of travel. Motorists may experience minor traffic slowdowns. Contractor – Mercer Fraser Company of Eureka.

Lake County

Route 29 – Traffic signal head replacement at the junction of Routes 29/175 in Middletown and at Wardlaw Street will begin Monday, April 8. Work hours are 7AM to 4PM, weekdays. A shoulder closure will be in effect. Motorists may experience minor traffic slowdowns. Contractor – Mike Brown Electric Company of Cotati.

Route 29 – Caltrans will perform routine maintenance from Bell Hill Road to the Kelsey Creek Bridge through Friday, April 5. Work hours are 7AM to 4PM, weekdays. One-way traffic control will be in effect. Motorists should anticipate 10-minute delays.

Route 53 – Highway widening and rehabilitation from 40th Avenue to the junction of Routes 20/53 will continue. Work hours are 7AM to 5PM, weekdays. One-way traffic control will be in effect. Motorists should anticipate 5-minute delays. Contractor – Teichert Construction of Davis. LC#C53AA

Mendocino County

Route 1 – NFS Productions of Universal City has been issued a Caltrans Encroachment permit for filming near Lighthouse Road on Tuesday and Wednesday, April 9 and 10. Work hours are 7AM to 7PM. Intermittent full road closures will be in effect. Motorists should anticipate 10-minute delays.

Route 1  – NFS Productions of Universal City has been issued a Caltrans Encroachment permit for filming near Windly Hollow Road through Friday, April 5. Work hours are 7AM to 3PM. One-way traffic control will be in effect. Motorists should anticipate 15-minute delays.

Route 1 – NFS Productions of Universal City has been issued a Caltrans Encroachment permit for filming near Mountain View Road on Tuesday and Wednesday, April 9 and 10. Work hours are 7AM to 7PM. One-way traffic control will be in effect. Motorists should anticipate 10-minute delays.

Route 1 – Replacement of the Greenwood Creek Bridge will continue. One-way traffic control with a temporary signal will be in effect 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. Motorists should anticipate 5-minute delays. Contractor – Golden State Bridge, Incorporated, of Martinez.

Route 1 – Slipout repairs 1.6 miles south of Navarro Bluff Road will continue. One-way traffic control with a temporary signal will be in effect 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. Motorists should anticipate 5-minute delays. Contractor – Green Right O’Way Constructors of Willits.

Route 1 – Bridge painting at the Salmon Creek Bridge and the Albion River Bridge will continue. Work hours are 7AM to 4PM, weekdays. One-way traffic control with a temporary signal will be in effect 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. Motorists should anticipate 5-minute delays. Contractor – Jeffco Painting and Coating of Vallejo.

Route 1 – Metal beam guardrail repair at various locations from Albion to the Hardy Creek Bridge will continue. Work hours are 7AM to 5PM, weekdays. One-way traffic control will be in effect. Motorists should anticipate 5-minute delays. Contractor – Coral Construction of Wilsonville.

Route 20 – Metal beam guardrail repair at various locations from the Broaddus Creek Bridge to the railroad crossing will begin Monday, April 8. Work hours are 7AM to 5PM, weekdays. One-way traffic control will be in effect. Motorists should anticipate 5-minute delays. Contractor – Coral Construction of Wilsonville.

Route 20 – Metal beam guardrail repair at various locations from the south junction of Routes 20/101 to the Cold Creek Bridge #5 will continue. Work hours are 7AM to 5PM, weekdays. One-way traffic control will be in effect. Motorists should anticipate 5-minute delays. Contractor – Coral Construction of Wilsonville.

Route 101 – Caltrans will perform slide repairs near the Korean War Veterans Memorial Bridge (near Frog Woman Rock). Northbound traffic will be restricted to one lane 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. Motorists may experience minor traffic slowdowns.

Route 101 – Vegetation removal from about 1.0 mile south of the Haehl Overhead Bridge to the Haehl Overhead Bridge will begin Monday, April 8. Work hours are 7AM to 6PM, weekdays. Intermittent one-way traffic control will be in effect. Motorists should anticipate 10-minute delays. Contractor – DeSilva Gates Construction of Dublin.

Route 101 – PG&E of Eureka has been issued a Caltrans Encroachment permit for tree trimming 1.1 miles north of Huntsman Way beginning Monday, April 8. Work hours are 7AM to 4PM, weekdays. One-way traffic control will be in effect. Motorists should anticipate 5-minute delays.

Route 128 – NFS Productions of Universal City has been issued a Caltrans Encroachment permit for filming about 1.5 miles west of Paul M Dimmick Park beginning Monday, April 8. Work hours are 7AM to 7PM. One-way traffic control will be in effect. Motorists should anticipate 10-minute delays.

Route 128 – NFS Productions of Universal City has been issued a Caltrans Encroachment permit for filming near Flynn Creek Road beginning Tuesday, April 2. Work hours are 7AM to 7PM. One-way traffic control will be in effect. Motorists should anticipate 15-minute delays.

Route 253 – NFS Productions of Universal City has been issued a Caltrans Encroachment permit for filming from the Soda Creek Bridge to 1.5 miles west of Cattle Pass on Saturday and Sunday, April 6 and 7. Work hours are 3PM to 5PM. One-way traffic control will be in effect. Motorists should anticipate 15-minute delays.

Route 253 – NFS Productions of Universal City has been issued a Caltrans Encroachment permit for filming from Cattle Pass to Butler Ranch beginning Thursday, April 11. Work hours are 7AM to 7PM. One-way traffic control will be in effect. Motorists should anticipate 15-minute delays.

Route 253 – NFS Productions of Universal City has been issued a Caltrans Encroachment permit for filming from 1.5 miles west of Cattle Pass to 2.3 miles east of Butler Ranch on Saturday and Sunday, April 6 and 7. Work hours are 6AM to 3PM. A full road closure will be in effect. Motorists are advised to use an alternate route.

Route 253 – PG&E of Eureka has been issued a Caltrans Encroachment permit for tree trimming from 0.2 mile west of Slide Creek to 0.6 mile west of Stipp Lane beginning Monday, April 8. Work hours are 8AM to 4PM, weekdays. One-way traffic control will be in effect. Motorists should anticipate 5-minute delays.
