Watch out for three DUI/Drivers License Checkpoints tonight in Sonoma County – one between 8 p.m. and 3 a.m. in Santa Rosa and two between 5 p.m. and 3 a.m. in Petaluma. Both are at undisclosed locations.

Officers will look  for signs of alcohol and/or drug impairment and check drivers for proper licensing. Fines for those caught driving while impaired can expect fines and fees of more than $10,000, according to Santa Rosa Police officials.

Drivers caught driving impaired can expect jail, license suspension, and insurance increases, as well as fines, fees, DUI classes, other expenses that can exceed $10,000.

In 2011, more than 774 people were killed in California in motor vehicle traffic crashes that involved at least one driver or motorcycle rider with a blood alcohol concentration of .08% or higher. “Over the course of the past three years, DUI collisions have claimed 2 lives and resulted in 122 injury crashes harming 147 of our friends and neighbors,” said Santa Rosa Sgt. Mike Numainville.

Funding for these checkpoints comes from a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge closures

The Bay Bridge will be closed from 8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 28, until 5 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 3, while its new east span is opened, replacing the original span. Caltrans urges motorists to choose an alternate route and allow extra travel time during that period.

Car seat inspections in Rohnert Park

The California Highway Patrol will assess the safety of car seats for children on Wednesday. Car seat technicians will inspect car seats to ensure that they are properly installed and have not been recalled or expired.
