Geysers Road slide removal. (Sonoma County)

As the dry season comes to an end, road crews are busy finishing summer projects, preparing for cold weather and laying the groundwork for projects that will continue throughout the winter. In Rohnert Park, work continues on roads that provide access to the new Graton Ridge Casino.

Expect hour-long delays on Lakeville Road east of Petaluma, extra noise along Highway 101 in Petaluma and night closures on Highway 101 north of Santa Rosa.

Rohnert Park

A facelift for Rohnert Park Expressway is in the planning stages, with construction dates still undetermined. Between Redwood Drive and Commerce Boulevard, the expressway will be slurry sealed and get new signs and striping, requring lane closures. Watch for construction signs in the vicinity.

Petaluma

Caltrans crews are doing pile-driving work this week on Highway 101 at the Old Redwood Highway Interchange. Work in the median should be completed today, with crews moving to the southwest corner of the interchange, according to Caltrans spokesman Allyn Amask. Pile-driving will continue next year on the north side of the interchange.

The piles are part of the foundation for a new bridge being built at that interchange. Work hours are 6 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Residents and business owners may notice increased noise during this phase of construction.

Santa Rosa

Caltrans plans full freeway closures of southbound U.S. 101 at Airport Boulevard on Oct. 15 and 16. Between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m., crews will install falsework, a temporary structure that will support construction of a new bridge. Traffic will be detoured, exiting on Shiloh Road. The work is weather dependent and will be rescheduled if necessary.

Northbound U.S. 101 will be closed closed Oct. 17 and 18, from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. , as will the northbound loop on-ramp to Airport Blvd. Traffic will be asked to exit on Fulton Road and follow detour signs.  More info: dot.ca.gov/dist4/101airportblvd.

Frei Road ditching and erosion control. (Sonoma County)

Rob Silva, road department operations manager for the county’s Department of Transportation and Public Works, supplied the following update:

With some high winds last weekend, road crews responded to several down trees over the weekend. On Friday evening, Cotati crews were called out due to a tree down across Bloomfield Road south of Sebastopol. Saturday morning at 1 a.m., the Sonoma crew responded to a tree down that closed Leveroni Road, and Saturday evening Cotati again went out for a tree across Mill Station Road near O’Connell Road.

This week, most road crew will be responding to drainage complaints and installing erosion controls to cleaned ditches and at stock pile sites. Oct. 15 signals the end to the summer dry season, and environmental permits for roadside ditching expire.

We will be closing the Vacation Beach Summer Crossing west of Guerneville this Oct. 10 to begin removing the crossing. By permit, all gravel used for the crossing must be removed by Oct. 15. The Asti crossing, near Cloverdale will remain at this time open due to fire season, as will the Odd Fellow crossing at Korbel, near Guerneville.

State fire crews will be working with county road crews clearing roadside vegetation along Burnside Road between Watertrough Road and Barnett Valley Road, and Vine Hill School Road between Vine Hill Road and Laguna Road this Tuesday and Wednesday.

The Bridge contractor will continue work this week on the Porter Creek Road bridge replacement project – expect up to 20 minute delays Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily.

A tree contractor will continue safety trimming on Lakeville Road, between Old Lakeville 2 Road and Old Lakeville 3, Monday through Wednesday this week. Because of continued heavy traffic along the Lakeville route, the contractor has changed message boards to read up to 1-hour delays, recommend using alternate routes. Work hours are posted as 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. to stay out of commute traffic.

A county contractor will be applying centerline striping  Monday on London Ranch Road, Thursday on Bodega Ave. and Friday and on Bloomfield Road. Moving traffic controls will be in place for each project.

Cal Pine will begin a plant overhaul today through October 26 on its Aidlin Plant, located near the steel bridge on Geysers Cloverdale Road. PG&E will also be working in the area replacing several power poles. During this time traffic will be heavy, with lots of large and oversize vehicles working and traveling the road both day and night. Signs have been posted warning both motorists and bicyclists using this route to drive with caution.
