Lichau Road, just east of Rohnert Park, won a previous contest. It was repaved this summer.

We’ve got lots of bad roads in Sonoma County. Even the bureaucrats say so, but which ones are the absolute worst?

Readers have nominated 56 in locations that stretch from Jenner to Petaluma, but five are tied for first place honors. Take another minute to break the tie by voting for one of the following:

– Spring Hill Road, Petaluma

– Barnes Road, Santa Rosa

– Burnside Road, Sebastopol

– Sonoma Mountain Road, unincorporated county

– Willowside Road, Santa Rosa

We’ll announce the results here on Tuesday, Nov. 12.

Sonoma Mountain Road is the most important road for getting over to Petaluma from Bennett Valley by car or Bike.

I don’t know if it constitutes a “vote,” but Backroads (a bicycle tour company) wrote the board of supervisors in late September to ask that they fix Sonoma Moutain Road. Backroads notes the county lists it as being in poor to failed condition and they have witnessed accidents on this raod that could have been prevented with an improved road surface.

Willowside Road from Guernevlle Road to Hall Road is really bad. It is also used a lot by bicyclists who have to dodge the many potholes which creates additional safety hazards for both bicyclists and motorists alike.

Sonoma Mountain is one of the longest “worst roads” so gets my vote, and there are so many others. Why are we using our special tax dollars to buy even more open space and for creating new parks when we can’t even maintain the parks, roads, and open space that we already have?

My “vote” also goes for maintaining such roads as Mount Taylor Drive and Bennett View Drive–two roads that get an enormous amount of school traffic but have enough potholes to sink a mini cooper!

Repair the roads, pick up the trash, beautify the parks–then we truly will be an area designed for living.

Barnes Road no doubt. Horrible holes and bumps. Oh, and did I for get to mention the flooding?

Barnes Road. Very narrow 2 lane rough road, no shoulders, no street lights, 4 foot deep ditches on both sides, entire roadway underwater in certain places during storms, potholes after every rain, marked for 35 mph but many drivers go 50mph+, drivers exiting 101 southbound try to uturn on River Rd. at Barnes, dangerous power poles right next to roadway, clueless bicycle riders. It’s just a matter of time until a driver drowns in a rain filled ditch due to the flooding. Even then, will the county fix it? I doubt it.

Barnes Road is not only in bad shape regarding it’s surface, but is also narrow and much of it without striping on the side and bordered by deep ditches with little or no shoulders. Very dangerous, especially at night.

Willowside Road, Santa Rosa, is my vote.

Right outside the private school is absolutely nothing but potholes. This isn’t a road with little need. This is a road that has a school and bike riders from the local bike path.

If the county and the city of Santa Rosa can use our tax money to allow themselves to retire at only age 50, they can start using that money for what its intended. Basic infrastructure.

We’re being robbed of our tax money by the public employees and bureaucrats.

My vote is for Barnes Road. I’ve had the unfortunate privilege of driving all these roads in recent time they are all horrible but “worse” to me is not limited to road condition. It should also include impact on vehicles and traffic counts. For example I have to envision a dividing line because it doesn’t really exist. There are also no shoulders. I also have to calculated at what speed to ride over a bump or pothole for fear on jumping the ‘invisible line’ and onto oncoming traffic. Then there’s that terrible “curve” at the southern end next to the light post. Ah!!! many good sideview mirrors have seen their last day there.

Sonoma Mountain Road. It’s so bad that recently a Makita battery charger and an 8′ 2×6 bounced out of a pickup truck when it hit a pothole.

Richard Shindal nailed what’s wrong with Sonoma Mtn. Rd. We actually got a flat tire as a result of hitting a deep pothole two winters ago!

Of the five roads listed, I vote for Spring Hill Road as being the worst. However, also terrible is Liberty Road between Skillman and Rainsville, one pothole after another and crumbling shoulders making an already narrow road even riskier.

Speaking of road risk, watching the Rhinehart Duck Farm workers speeding east down Nadele’s Hill on Middle Two Rock after their shift ends is like watching a major tradgedy in the making. MTR is so narrow that there is absolutely no room for error.

All of the five roads are awful, but I’m choosing Sonoma Mt. Road off of Pressley to Warm Springs Road. It is one way to get to Glen Ellen and a way to get to BV Road.
