East Cotati Avenue will be closed at the railroad tracks today through Sunday for construction on the Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit line, and to relocate a rare coast redwood tree.

The railroad crossing closed to traffic at 7 a.m. today and will remain closed until 7 p.m. Sunday. Controlled pedestrian access will be available Friday through Sunday, SMART announced.

Today, crews will relocate a chimera redwood tree just south of East Cotati Avenue. SMART was slated to remove the rare tree but decided to relocate it after public outcry. Friday through Sunday, crews will be building a second set of tracks across East Cotati Avenue. The work is part of a project to prepare for commuter train service scheduled to start in 2016.

Drivers can use Southwest Boulevard to traverse the tracks during the closure.
