Trying to make sense out of getting around

What’s going on with gas prices?

After rocketing up an average of about 55 cents in the past month — more at some stations — gas prices in Sonoma County appear to have leveled off and may even have peaked. Analysts say the price surge was driven by the annual switch by refineries from making winter gas to more expensive-to-produce-but-cleaner summer gas and by some refineries reducing production to do maintenance. AAA reported Wednesday that the average price for regular gas in Santa Rosa was $4.169,… Read More »

Why gas prices are jumping

It was nice while it lasted. Gas prices in Santa Rosa, and across the state, have been rocketing toward $4 a gallon, and analysts say they may even near the record high, set just last fall. On Wednesday, AAA reported that the average for regular was $3.864 a gallon in Santa Rosa, up a couple of cents from the day before, up nearly 20 cents  in the past week and up nearly 30 cents in the past month. A year… Read More »

Gas in Santa Rosa cheaper than a year ago

Yes, it’s hard to believe that gas prices have fallen so much, especially after they skyrocketed to a record last month. And we all want them lower. AAA reported Sunday that a gallon of regular in Santa Rosa averaged $3.753 — less than the $3.791 of a year ago and almost $1 cheaper than the record $4.65 of Oct. 9. Some local stations are much less than the area average. Gasbuddy.com listed gas for $3.47 a gallon at Rotten Robbie,… Read More »

Santa Rosa gas prices below $4

After record high gas prices last month, Santa Rosa-area drivers are finding their costs continue to drop with the average price now less than $4 a gallon. AAA reported Monday that the average was $3.973 for regular, and that’s getting closer to the average $3.855 a year ago. Last week, it was $4.16 and the record was Oct. 9 at $4.65. Customer reports to gasbuddy.com showed that a few stations in Petaluma were selling gas for $3.77 —  20 cents… Read More »

Local gas prices finally back down to where they were

Santa Rosa’s average gas price has dropped to about where it was before skyrocketing earlier this month, and analysts are forecasting gas will continue to get cheaper for at least a few weeks. AAA on Monday reported that the average price for regular was $4.16 a gallon compared to the $4.15 in late September before an oil pipeline in the state was shut, a Southern California refinery was knocked off line by a power failure and two refineries shut for… Read More »

Why California gas prices are so crazy

Santa Rosa’s average price for a gallon of regular gas has inched down to $4.436 after skyrocketing within a few days to a record $4.65 two weeks ago. Why our are gas prices so crazy? There’s an excellent story in the Los Angeles Times by Ken Bensinger that explains it all. And he writes that Californians can expect more wild price spikes. Basically, California is an island when it comes to gas production. The state’s air pollution regulations require a… Read More »

Santa Rosa gas price finally drops, barely

The days of record high gas prices in Santa Rosa appear to be over. Let’s hope. AAA reported Wednesday that the average price for regular in the Santa Rosa area had dropped less than a penny to $4.642 from the record $4.65 reported the day before. Just a week ago it had been $4.251 and a month ago it had been $4.187. Patrick DeHaan, a senior petroleum analyst for gasbuddy.com, said he expects prices in Santa Rosa and across California… Read More »

Gas prices may be at record high in Santa Rosa

Sonoma County drivers very likely may be paying record high prices for gas. AAA on Friday reported that its price survey on Thursday showed the average price for regular in the Santa Rosa area was $4.513 a gallon — just 4 cents shy of the record of $4.55 set on June 19, 2008. With many stations having raised their prices since Thursday, it seems reasonable that the average has gone over $4.55. For example, Costco in Santa Rosa was $4.27… Read More »

Why gas prices suddenly are shooting up

A week ago, Santa Rosa’s average price for regular gasoline was $4.15 a gallon,  AAA said. On Monday, it was $4.195. Yesterday, it was $4.25. What’s going on? Refinery problems and market jitters are to blame, says Patrick DeHaan, senior petroleum analysts with gasbuddy.com. And prices may keep climbing for at least a couple of weeks, he warns. Bloomberg News Service reported that Exxon Mobile’s 150,000-barrel-a-day refinery in Torrance near Los Angeles lost power on Monday; Chevron’s Richmond refinery is… Read More »

Gas now cheaper than a year ago

The average price of gas in Santa Rosa keeps on sinking and now it’s lower than a year ago. Santa Rosa’s average fell to less than $4… Read More »
