Trying to make sense out of getting around

This week’s road closures and cone zones

Caltrans projects along Highway 101 lead the news this week, with delays and lane closures on Airport Boulevard in Santa Rosa and from Petaluma south to the Marin County line. The following information comes from CalTrans spokesmen Adam Priest and Phil Frisbie Jr., and Sonoma County Road Department Operations Manager Rob Silva.  Caltrans – Santa Rosa Airport Blvd. at Fulton Rd. — Signal construction project begins Monday, April 15, with completion in early May. Expect up to 30-minute delays. Caltrans… Read More »

Mailbag: Dirt, concrete pile along 101; free air/water at gas stations; 116 hazard

Questions from our readers: What’s up with the dirt/concrete pile along 101? What is all the construction going on east of Highway 101 just south of Petaluma?  It’s been a curiosity for a couple of weeks now, and has gotten to the point where it’s now causing traffic delays in the morning.  The work isn’t technically on the freeway.  It’s just east of it, a hundred yards or so off the side of the road.  They’ve put a long orange… Read More »

Mailbag: When will Stony Point Road be fixed? ‘Blind’ Bicentennial merge

Here’s a question from a reader: Can you tell me anything as to why Stony Point Road between Sebastopol Road and Hearn/Bellevue area is so thrashed and why little to no work is done on it? I’m also curious if you wouldn’t mind posting about a very troublesome intersection at Hearn and Stony Point where motorists seem unfamiliar with the responsibilities of yielding to ALL traffic when turning left at a solid green light. I think the people need re-education.… Read More »

When is Hwy. 101 speed limit going back up?

Road Warrior readers have been writing in regularly for the last few weeks asking when is the speed limit on Highway 101 from north Petaluma to south Santa Rosa going to be raised back to 65. We’ve been asking Caltrans, too, and here’s the answer from spokesman Adam Priest: Caltrans is currently in the process of completing all task list items related to the completion of the U.S. Route 101 Central A and B Project. During this and the prior… Read More »

New northbound Highway 101 opens in Rohnert Park

Ahh, finally. Caltrans on Wednesday morning opened the third northbound lane of Highway 101 through Rohnert Park and plans to open the third southbound lane on Thursday morning. Work to widen the highway in Rohnert Park began three years ago. Some finishing touches remain in both directions, including paving and striping. The third lanes will be carpool only during commute hours, ending the bottleneck carpoolers encountered in Rohnert Park where there were only two lanes and no carpool lane. Now,… Read More »

New Highway 101 lanes to open in 2 weeks in Rohnert Park

About three years after construction work began to widen Highway 101 in Rohnert Park, the new lanes tentatively are scheduled to open in two weeks, Caltrans said. Spokesman Adam Priest said the plan calls for opening the new, third southbound lane from Santa Rosa Avenue to Rohnert Park Expressway on Wednesday morning, Aug. 29, and the new, third northbound lane on Thursday morning, Aug. 30. Once opened, the lanes will be carpool only during commute hours, ending the bottleneck carpoolers… Read More »

Latest update on Highway 101, lane closures

For Highway 101 drivers, relief is almost here. Caltrans is continuing to do finishing work on the highway between Santa Rosa Avenue and Rohnert Park Expressway, and Caltrans spokesman Adam Priest says the third lane is expected to be open by the end of this month or early September. But he adds a caveat: “With that, these projects require scheduling of stripers, etc., during a very busy time for construction.” So it could be later. Once opened, the third lane… Read More »

Caltrans repaving part of Highway 12 in Santa Rosa

Caltrans has started a night paving project on Highway 12 in Santa Rosa that will last through about the end of the month. The work is being done from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. Monday through Friday from Farmers Lane to Mission Boulevard. Crews are grinding down the pavement this week and next week they’ll do the paving using a special technique — “bonding wearing course” — designed to extend the life of the existing pavement by including a layer… Read More »

Mailbag: A Sebastopol crosswalk hazard? Fixing Hwy. 101 from Windsor to Healdsburg

Here’s a question from a Road Warrior reader. It was quite lengthy, so we’ve edited it down a bit: I have a big concern about the Caltrans work on the crosswalks in  Sebastopol.  The flashing lights on the crosswalks are great.  However, several of the crosswalks now have a person-height electrical-type box on the sidewalk that obscures the view of a person ready to cross the street. WHY in the world did they place these on the side of… Read More »
