Trying to make sense out of getting around

Is your road on Plan Bay Area list?

The new Plan Bay Area was adopted last week, outlining transportation and land-use projects to be funded through 2040 within Sonoma, Napa and the other seven Bay Area counties. It’s dependent on receiving an anticipated 292 billion in federal, state and local money, but includes the following road projects. Is your pet project among them? Metropolitan Transportation Commission spokesman John Goodwin breaks out the expenditures, saying, “Nearly 88 percent (or $253 billion) of the transportation funds will be used to maintain… Read More »

Highway 12 closed at night in Napa County

Highway 12 through Jameson Canyon  in Napa County will be closed at night this week  to allow construction crews to do drainage/culvert work as part of widening the road. The highway will be closed 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. Monday through Friday from Highway 29 and Red Top Road, weather permitting. Drivers should use Highway 37 instead of 12 to get to and from Interstate 80. The about $115 million Highway 12 project will widen the road to four lanes… Read More »

Napa’s blood alley to be fixed

Napa County’s blood alley is on its way to being fixed. The state Transportation Commission last week approved more than $130 million to widen Highway 12 to four lanes with a median barrier from Highway 29 to basically Interstate 80. That stretch also is called Jameson Canyon Road, and it’s been the site of many fatal and serious injury accidents over the years, many head-on. Most of the road is two lanes, and drivers often take the curves faster than… Read More »

Why all the litter bags on highways

Caltrans this week is going to make a statement about litter. The highways being cleaned in Sonoma County are 12, 101 and 116 and in Napa County 29 and 221. Last year during similar anti-litter campaigns, Caltrans crews in… Read More »

Traffic delays back on Hwy. 121

Night work — and traffic delays — are back along Highway 121 between Sonoma and Napa counties. Caltrans’ $6.5 million construction project to smooth out a bit the curves east of the Sonoma County line has moved on to a paving stage. Weather permitting, the work is being done 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. Monday to Friday and is expected to last through the second or third week of November, Caltrans spokesman Marcus Wagner said. Avoid Hwy. 121 in Napa if you can

Going to Napa in the evening? Plan to leave earlier if you’re taking Highway 121. A $6.5 million Caltrans construction project to smooth out a bit the curves east of the Sonoma County line is creating long backups in the evenings, and they’re going to last awhile longer. Caltrans spokesman Marcus Wagner said the traffic delays caused by one-way traffic controls typically are five to 10 minutes, although Road Warrior readers have reported waits of up to 30 minutes. Andrew… Read More »
