Trying to make sense out of getting around

Mailbag: Crosswalk warning, or a target?

Here’s a question from a reader: I’ve noticed these signs popping up all over the place in the middle of crosswalks. They are narrow tall signs mounted to the street that say yield to pedestrians. One spot I have noticed them is at the crosswalk at Old Redwood Hwy at Lark Center Drive in front of the Larkfield Shopping Center. These signs are usually out of the way but at this crosswalk they are effectively in the middle of the… Read More »

One example is Old Redwood Highway from Petaluma to Cotati. Here’s the full list from the county roads department and what work will… Read More »

Latest update on Highway 101, lane closures

For Highway 101 drivers, relief is almost here. Caltrans is continuing to do finishing work on the highway between Santa Rosa Avenue and Rohnert Park Expressway, and Caltrans spokesman Adam Priest says the third lane is expected to be open by the end of this month or early September. But he adds a caveat: “With that, these projects require scheduling of stripers, etc., during a very busy time for construction.” So it could be later. Once opened, the third lane… Read More »

Caltrans says it’ll close a southbound lane of Highway 101 between Healdsburg and Windsor for several upcoming nights to allow emergency repairs to concrete sections of the road. This project has been scheduled twice in the past month and canceled within hours both times. Caltrans hasn’t explained why and hasn’t responded to our inquiries asking why. The… Read More »

Santa Rosa gas prices fall a bit

There’s hope: Gas prices are slowly inching down in Santa Rosa and across the state, AAA reports. The average price for regular on Monday was $4.23 a gallon, down about a penny from the day before, down 5 cents from a week ago and down 10 cents from a month ago. But a year ago, gas was $4.154. Still, prices range widely in Santa Rosa, with $3.98 apparently the lowest. That’s at the 76 station at Old Redwood Highway and… Read More »

Gas for less than $4 a gallon

I had to stop and look twice. Yep, gas for less than $4 a gallon in Santa Rosa. The Union 76 station at Mark West Springs Road and Old Redwood Highway in Larkfield, just north of Santa Rosa, is selling regular for $3.98 for cash, as of Saturday afternoon. That compares to, according to gasbuddy.com, $4.15 a gallon at Costco and various Arco stations in Santa Rosa, which typically have the lowest prices. The average price Saturday for Santa Rosa… Read More »

Mailbag: Do bicyclists have to stay in bikes lanes? Can you use disabled placards/license plates out of state?

Here’s a question from a reader: Over a week ago I saw a group of about 20 cyclist heading north on Old Redwood in Windsor. This was a two-lane stretch near Hembree Lane with a clearly marked bicycle lane. About half of the cyclist rode in the designated bike lane, but the other half rode in the right hand lane, forcing traffic to use the left lane to pass. Is it legal for cyclists to ride in the right lane… Read More »

Caltrans this week plans to spruce up a couple of ramps on Highway 101, but that means those ramps will be closed for several hours.
