Trying to make sense out of getting around

Your 101/Airport Blvd. questions answered

Work started last night on the new interchange at Airport Blvd. and Highway 101, and readers have sent a lot of questions. Answers are coming in a few at a time. Here’s what we learned today from Rob Sprinkle, Santa Rosa traffic engineer, and  Tom O’Kane, deputy director of Sonoma County’s Department of Transportation and Public Works. As of noon Tuesday, O’Kane said his office hadn’t received a single complaint. Treat that as a sign that the launch of night… Read More »

Each week, the officers pick one of the city’s… Read More »

Planning to drive through the intersection of Stony Point and Sebastopol roads in Santa Rosa? Better be careful. It again ranks No. 1 in the city for highest number of reported collisions. The Roseland-area intersection racked up 16 collisions last year, twice that of 2011 when it tied for sixth place but down from 20 in 2010 and 19 in 2009 when it ranked No. 1 for both years. 2011′s No. 1 — Highway 12 at Mission Boulevard — fell… Read More »

Will water project lead to spelling improvement?

It’s a fear that sign makers — and journalists — live with: Misspellings. A Road Warrior reader alerted us to this sign at Range and Russell avenues in Santa Rosa and an identical one just down the street at Range and Piner Road with the misspelling of improvement. The reader  jokingly wondered if the project might lead to a spelling improvement too. The two signs are all that’s left of the water project, which involved installing a 12-inch water line… Read More »

Mailbag: Left turn lanes for turning or merging, not passing; green stuff on 101

We’ve had some questions from readers regarding center turn lanes on city streets. For example: I thought the double turn lane was to be used as little as possible.  I live in Northwest Santa Rosa and usually use Piner Road to get to 101.  I often see drivers traveling quite far in the center turn lane, but occasionally it seems that the driver thinks the lane is an additional travel lane until they reach an intersection, where they merge into… Read More »
