Update on Highway 101 project

If you’re tired of the uneven pavement on Highway 101 between Rohnert Park and Petaluma, there’s light at the end of the tunnel. Caltrans spokesman Robert Haus says the final paving project is set to start June 4 and will take about four to six weeks to complete. That’s weather permitting. A streak of rain or unusually cold weather could pushed that back a bit. As for the last segments of the Wilfred Avenue and Commerce Boulevard overpasses in Rohnert… Read More »

Rebuilding of 101/Airport Blvd. interchange may start this fall

Reconstruction of the Airport Boulevard interchange on Highway 101 north of Santa Rosa could begin this fall after the state Transportation Commission on Friday approved $24.1 million for the project. Once finished, expected in fall 2014, the project will expand the Airport Boulevard interchange to a diamond shape, with much longer, wider and sweeping on- and offramps. The bigger interchange will abut the one just to the south at Fulton Road, and that one will be eliminated for safety reasons,… Read More »

Highway 101 lane closure canceled — again

For the second time in a week, Caltrans has announced a repair project for Highway 101 between Healdsburg and Windsor and then within a few hours canceled it. On Thursday morning, Caltrans said it would close the right southbound lane for several upcoming nights to allow emergency repairs to concrete sections of the road. Then on Thursday afternoon, Caltrans announced it again had to postpone the work. Last Thursday, Caltrans went through the same drill. Caltrans spokesman Robert Haus said… Read More »

Mailbag: Missing speed limit. Traffic cams. 12/121 flooding

Here’s a question from a reader: Redwood Drive is the frontage road west of Highway 101 in Rohnert Park.  If you head north onto Redwood Drive from Business Park Drive, next to The Press Democrat facility, there is not a speed limit sign until just before Wilfred.  There used to be a sign previous to the 101 construction, but it has gone missing for a year or more. This has affected some of our industrial park customers since the police… Read More »

Highway 101 lane closure postponed

Caltrans has postponed its plan to close a southbound lane of Highway 101 between Healdsburg and Windsor for several nights to allow emergency repairs to concrete sections of the road. The closures were to have started Thursday night and would have affected the right southbound lane from Old Redwood Highway in Healdsburg to the downtown Windsor offramp. Caltrans spokesman Robert Haus said in a statement Thursday afternoon it wasn’t known yet when the work would proceed. ————– Follow the Road… Read More »

Petaluma gets another day of peace and quiet

Caltrans says the pile driving project that was to start Tuesday at Highway 101 and East Washington Street in Petaluma has been delayed until Wednesday at the earliest because of the storm forecast for Tuesday. With rain expected for the next couple of days, Caltrans spokesman Robert Haus said engineers will decide on a daily basis whether to start the work. The pile driving will be just north of East Washington along northbound 101 and eventually will support a new… Read More »

Big changes for Highways 12-121 intersection / see photo

Caltrans this week began construction work on reconfiguring the intersection of Highways 12 and 121 south of Sonoma, putting a traffic light there and changing the habits of many drivers. The project, which is costing $2.4 million for the construction, will realign Highway 12 and cause it to meet Highway 121 in a T-intersection. Now, the two highways meet at an angle. Just to the northeast of the Highway 12 intersection, Fremont Road intersects with 121. Many, if not nearly… Read More »

Mailbag: What are the poles with solar panels on Hwy. 101? Carpool signs?

Here’s a question from a reader: What are the poles with the solar panels that are installed along Highway 101? M.W. The answer comes from Caltrans spokesman Robert Haus, who says they’re transmission towers. Embedded in the pavement along Highway 101 are sensors that can track the number of vehicles and the velocity of the traffic. That data goes to a microwave relay unit on a pole and that data is sent to Caltrans’ Traffic Management Center, or “Mission Control,”… Read More »

Mailbag: Why carpool lane hours differ in Sonoma County vs. Marin County

We’ve had some questions from readers wondering about the hours of carpool lanes in Sonoma County and such, so we pitched them to Caltrans spokesman Robert Haus to answer: Why are the HOV lanes on 101 in Marin County just one direction in the morning and evening but both directions in Sonoma County? The first segment of Marin-101 HOV lane that opened in 1974 as a bus lane. Carpools were permitted in 1976.  Traffic congestion increased in one predominate direction… Read More »

Mailbag: Trash along Hwy. 101 and Petaluma sound walls

Here are a couple of questions from readers regarding Highway 101. First: I’m concerned with the amount of debris that is building up along the 101 concrete median divider from Windsor to Rohnert Park. Is the cleanup Caltrans’ responsibility or the county or the city? It’s becoming an eyesore and an embarrassment. Steve The answer comes from Caltrans spokesman Robert Haus: Our maintenance folks had some problems with sweepers breaking down, which put them behind schedule. They’ve scheduled the sweeping… Read More »
