Mailbag: Forestville roundabout and the 1-lane Laughlin Bridge

Question: Does Forestville REALLY need an expensive roundabout at Hwy. 116 and Mirabel Road? Maybe we should use the money for schools or pothole repair instead and wait for the signal/roundabout decision until the Highway 116 bypass is in the works. — Jim S. Answer: It ain’t gonna happen. This is the first phase of the bypass, and it is already in the works. Because  money for this project comes from the Measure M tax approved by voters in 2004, it… Read More »

Porter Creek delays, and other county road reports

If you plan to cross the Mayacamas this week, plan your route carefully, suggests reader Brian Maloney. A bridge replacement project on Porter Creek road is creating quite a snarl. Another project destined to irritate commuters is ramping up on Arnold Drive and Aqua Caliente, but is still in the early stages. Question: Haven’t seen anything about this yet in the news, but they’re replacing the bridge at Porter Creek and Franz Valley Road. Any news on detours or timing… Read More »

You dug it up? You repair it

When utility companies or other contractors dig up the road, who’s responsible for repairing it once they’re done? They are, Sonoma County sources said. But reader Myra Goodman asked specifically about the intersection of Arnold Drive at Agua Caliente Road in Sonoma. “They recently did some extensive work at that intersection which required digging a trench on Arnold Drive,” she wrote. ” The section of road at that intersection was paved no more than 9 months ago.  PG&E did a… Read More »

Mailbag: Petaluma roundabout, illegal U-turn

Here’s a question from a Road Warrior reader: For the last 3 weeks I’ve watched the police presence at the roundabout near 101 on Petaluma Blvd S change from enforcement to encroachment.  There’s been an officer stationed at the roundabout 4 of 5 mornings every single week, often with TWO officers in the region.  I feel like the city is trying to harvest ticket revenue from the area. I’ve been commuting this area for months and don’t understand the issue.  If… Read More »

Roundabout planned for Sonoma Valley

Sonoma County is proposing to build a roundabout on Arnold Drive at Agua Caliente Road, the entrance to the Hanna Boys Center, in the Sonoma Valley. The roundabout, projected to cost $2 million if approved, would be built next spring and would be the first one on a major county-maintained road, officials said. Rex Cummins, project design engineer with the county Department of Transportation and Public Works, said 2004′s voter-approved Measure M sales-tax hike specifically listed the intersection for some… Read More »

Highway 20 roundabout under construction

Caltrans has started building a roundabout on Highway 20 at Nice-Lucerne Cutoff Road in an attempt to improve safety at the Lake County intersection. A Caltrans statement said the collision rate at the intersection near Nice is more than five times the statewide average for similar intersections. “The roundabout will reduce the number and severity of collisions,” the statement said. “It will also lower vehicle emissions by lessening idle times compared to a traffic signal.” The project is estimated… Read More »

Fort Bragg’s $4.4 million roundabout

After more than four years of planning and preparation at a cost of about $2.8 million, Caltrans is ready to break ground to build a roundabout on Highway 1 just south of Fort Bragg. Construction was estimated at $1.6 million, for a total cost of $4.4 million, but last week Fedco Construction Inc. of Santa Rosa was awarded the contract on a bid of $1.36 million, so the total cost should be less, around $4.2 million. Caltrans spokesman Phil Frisbie… Read More »
