Trying to make sense out of getting around

Look at what’s ahead for Airport Blvd.

Real construction work won’t begin until June 3 on the new Airport Boulevard interchange off Highway 101 north of Santa Rosa, but Caltrans has released images of the design and the proposed detours. Take a look at what is planned for the project that will be with us until late 2014, when the newly designed Airport Boulevard exit will include a new five-lane bridge across Highway 101, a sidewalk for pedestrians and Class II bike lanes. The Fulton Road exit… Read More »

Mailbag: Where are the sidewalks? Can police ignore traffic laws?

Here are questions from Road Warrior readers: What happened to the sidewalks? Construction just finished on Shiloh Road west of Highway 101 in Windsor. They seem to have left pedestrians out during this recent construction. All existing sidewalks were in the north side of Shiloh Road this includes both the area in front of the Wyndham Resort and the highway overpass.  The south side of the road has very narrow shoulders with (in some cases) not even a bike lane.… Read More »

Work starts on Airport Blvd./101 interchange reconstruction

Caltrans on Wednesday is scheduled to begin cutting down trees and bushes at the Highway 101 interchange at Airport Boulevard north of Santa Rosa as a step toward rebuilding that interchange. The work isn’t expected to cause any lanes on Highway 101 or Airport to be closed. The major job of actually redoing the interchange at a cost of $34.5 million is due to start this spring. Once completed in fall 2014, the project will expand the Airport Boulevard interchange… Read More »

Mailbag: A Sebastopol crosswalk hazard? Fixing Hwy. 101 from Windsor to Healdsburg

Here’s a question from a Road Warrior reader. It was quite lengthy, so we’ve edited it down a bit: I have a big concern about the Caltrans work on the crosswalks in  Sebastopol.  The flashing lights on the crosswalks are great.  However, several of the crosswalks now have a person-height electrical-type box on the sidewalk that obscures the view of a person ready to cross the street. WHY in the world did they place these on the side of… Read More »

Big changes coming on Highway 101

The widening of Highway 101 is about to take some big leaps forward. –This week, weather permitting, Caltrans says, construction crews will begin the final paving of 101 from Rohnert Park Expressway to Petaluma Boulevard North, doing the work overnight to limit traffic delays. Northbound work is scheduled for 7 p.m. to 6 a.m., while southbound is 7 p.m. to 5 a.m., ending an hour earlier to get out of the way of commuters. At some point the paving will… Read More »

Update on Highway 101 project

If you’re tired of the uneven pavement on Highway 101 between Rohnert Park and Petaluma, there’s light at the end of the tunnel. Caltrans spokesman Robert Haus says the final paving project is set to start June 4 and will take about four to six weeks to complete. That’s weather permitting. A streak of rain or unusually cold weather could pushed that back a bit. As for the last segments of the Wilfred Avenue and Commerce Boulevard overpasses in Rohnert… Read More »
