Here’s a question from a reader:

What about law enforcement parked on private property with radar guns? I sometimes see motorcycle officers parked in business or residence driveways. Are they given written permission by the owner of the property? Are there any guidelines for law enforcement about this? Alex

The answer:

Petaluma Police Sgt. Ken Savano, who supervises Petaluma’s motorcycle officers, says “we often seek permission or are given permission because the owner has requested enforcement.  Otherwise, we restrict our locations to public right-of-way or off-street parking facilities open to the public. ”

An officer for another department says officers often will park in businesses’ parking lots and such along roads to watch for traffic violators. If the business asks them to move, they will. But sometimes it might just be a few feet to the public sidewalk.
