Santa Rosa motorcycle police officers this coming week will monitor one of the city’s most collision-prone intersections — Morgan Street at College Avenue, which last year was fourth worst with 10 collisions.
As part of a weekly, Monday through Sunday, special enforcement program, Officer Jeff Adams says officers particularly will be looking for drivers not wearing seat belts, who are illegally using cellphones, are speeding, running red lights or committing lane violations.
Each week, the officers pick one of the city’s top 25 collision-troubled intersections to monitor.

When these weekly targeted intersections are announced, I think it would be interesting to readers to see a tally of the previous weeks results and how it compares to results from typical traffic patrol enforcement.
I just can’t seem to be convinced there is any advantage to camping a particular intersection, especially based on the previous years accidents. There are many busy traffic light intersections close by and a crew could easily cruise a half dozen or more over and over and catch many more violations.
For example cruising between Administration Drive and Coddingtown area there at least 7 intersection that could be monitored in a 5 minute time period. Do this 50 to 100 times that day and results would greatly increase.

What drives me crazy is how many people don’t use their turn signal!!!! It’s a guessing game out there, are you turning left or are you turning right???????? I didn’t know that the turn signal was a extra option in cars now, they still do come with them right?

How about this new and rampant trend of people listening to music with headphones on while driving. I’m pretty sure it is reckless and illegal since you cannot hear a horn or a siren. One earbud – legal. Both earbuds – Dangerous and illegal.
Why have i never seen or heard of a ticket for this behavior?
The problem has only intensified since ipods and smartphones became commonplace.
I treat drivers with headphones on like i do drunk drivers or drivers reading or putting on make-up.

This is a very dangerous intersection and there is (almost) never law enforcement presence (patrolling the west side?). The most dangerous is making a left turn onto Mission from Westbound HWY 12. Too many people blowing the red light on Mission going toward Montecito (I guess the cycle is too long and they don’t want to wait). The second most dangerous: The Walgreen’s with new Drive-Thur entrance (literally).

I saw 5 cars turn left onto Mission from West 12 after the light heading East had turned green. Luckily the cars going East waited through all of them. East 4th turning left towards flamingo 4 cars through the red. Not just the front bumper after yellow, but the whole 4 cars while it was red. Cars waiting for them so they could continue West.

OK everyone, don’t hold your breath hoping a cop will ticket those examples. Seriously, cops appear to ignore these violations and some may, but the officers the city can afford are working under a heavy demand and long hours. I think pressure should be on city and police administrators to adjust priorities to include a 2-3 fold priority to enforce any and all observed violations with tickets – no warnings.
