This week, Santa Rosa police are monitoring one of the city’s most collision-prone intersections, West Third Avenue at Stony Point Road, which  last year was tied for fourth place with 9 collisions.

As part of a weekly Monday through Friday special enforcement program, Officer Jeff Adams says officers particularly will be looking for drivers not wearing seat belts, who are illegally using cellphones, are speeding, running red lights or committing lane violations.

Each week, the officers pick one of the city’s top 25 collision-troubled intersections to monitor.

What they should do at this intersection is see how they can design the timing of the lights better so people get through it in a reasonable time. I think this is one of the worst intersections in town for this and people get so frustrated here they drive more angrily and take more chances. Perhaps it’s a case of a bad barrel rather than bad apples.

This is one of several accident prone intersections in Santa Rosa. One of the worse ones is the intersection of Steele/Guerneville Road and Cleveland. My 16 y/o daughter just got her driver’s permit last Friday. Yesterday, she was stopped at that intersection. When we got the green light, we couldn’t go for quite a while because 4 – 5 vehicles were making a left turn in front of us even though their left turn light had turned red long ago. I couldn’t believe the stupidity the drivers exhibited. We were forced to wait until this “freight train” of cars breaking the law was finished.

Crash-happy? Really? When are they going to do the intersection of Santa Rosa Avenue and the entrance to Santa Rosa Marketplace? Don’t know if that’s technically an intersection, but as a pedestrian I have NEVER felt safe in that area…
