Today, we answer your questions:

Q: Is there a new law requiring drivers to move to the left lane if possible when passing a cop, firetruck, ambulance, etc. on the shoulder?

A: Yes, starting last Jan. 1, the law now requires drivers to move over to the left lane (such as on 101) if safe to do so or to slow down when passing any emergency vehicle or construction vehicle that’s on the right shoulder and has ANY flashing lights on, such as emergency lights or four-way flashers.

CHP Officer Jon Sloat said the CHP considers slowing down to mean at least 15 mph slower than the speed limit. He said the law doesn’t apply when those vehicles are on the right shoulder but don’t have flashing lights on, although he said safe driving generally would mean slowing some anyway.

Q: Is there any law on how loud your music can be in your car?

A: Sloat says is if an officer can hear the music more than 50 feet away, you could get a ticket.
