By late August or early September construction crews should be replacing deteriorating sections of Highway 101 in Ukiah as part of a $10.4 million project.

Caltrans announced Wednesday that crews will rip out failing concrete sections between the south Ukiah exit and just north of West Road in Redwood Valley and will pour new concrete. Caltrans spokesman Phil Frisbie Jr. said most of the work will be done at night and will require one lane to be closed.

He said the entire 12-mile project, covering both north and southbound lanes, is being paid for by federal stimulus money. In fact, he noted the $10.4 million bid by Granite Construction Co. of Watsonville was $5.6 million less than budgeted, so the unspent money will be used for other highway projects.

The work is expected to be finished by fall 2011.

Frisbie noted the deteriorating sections are about 45 years old.
