Construction crews Monday will start a $10.4 million project to repair Highway 101 from south of Ukiah to just north of West Road in Redwood Valley.

Workers initially will repave the highway’s shoulders bordering the median from 5 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays. Traffic will be restricted to one lane in each direction during the work hours.

Then beginning Sunday, Sept. 12, crews will switch to night shifts to rip out failing sections of the highway’s concrete roadway and to pour new concrete slabs.

Traffic will be limited to one lane in each direction from 8 p.m. Sundays to 3 p.m. Fridays. All lanes are to be open from Friday afternoon to Sunday evening.

Caltrans spokesman Phil Frisbie Jr. said that by limiting traffic to one lane Sunday nights through Friday afternoons crews will save time by not having to set up and take down traffic controls each day and it will be safer for them and motorists.

Speed limits will be reduced during work hours to 45 in active work areas and 55 elsewhere along the stretch of 101.

The project, paid for with federal stimulus money, is expected to be finished by fall 2011.
