A Kenwood man was arrested last weekend on suspicion of DUI — while driving a riding lawn mower.

CHP Officer Cyril Ruffin was on patrol at 7:50 p.m. Saturday in Kenwood when he saw John Poshepny, 55, driving the mower through the parking lot of Kenwood Market and down Greene Street.

Ruffin stopped Poshepny and noted the odor of alcohol on his breath, the CHP said. Poshepny told Ruffin he occasionally uses the mower to go to the store to get groceries.

After noting further signs of intoxication, Ruffin determined Poshepny was drunk and arrested him, the CHP said. Poshepny was booked into the Sonoma County Jail, where he was cited and released.

“DUI applies to any motorized vehicle and bikes,” Officer Jon Sloat said in a statement. “Skateboards, Razor type scooters, wheelchairs, etc. the individual would be considered drunk in public if an officer determined that they were unable to take care of their safety.

UPDATE: Sloat said Wednesday that Poshepny has been convicted twice of DUI, although it was unknown what vehicle(s) he drove at the time of his previous arrests.
